Kenya Government Says Opposition 'Unresponsive' To Talks

NAIROBI—Kenya's government blamed the opposition on Thursday for failed efforts by African Union chairman John Kufuor to mediate a solution to their dispute over President Mwai Kibaki's re-election.

"The government had offered dialogue which was to be facilitated by President John Kufuor but Orange Democratic Movement leaders have not been responsive," said a statement from Kibaki's office minutes after the opposition blamed him for intransigence.

Kenya Opposition Says AU-mediated Talks Fail

NAIROBI—Kenya's opposition said on Thursday that efforts by the head of the African Union (AU) to broker a deal over the country's disputed election had failed due to intransigence by President Mwai Kibaki.

"President Kufuor this afternoon presented to Kibaki an agreement agreed to by our representatives, but Mr Kibaki refused to sign it," said Orange Democratic Movement secretary general Anyang' Nyong'o. "This is a slap in the face ... to the (AU) mission and the international community."
