MELBOURNE—More Victorians are going green as the impact of climate change continue to bite.
The number of households opting for green energy has doubled in the past 12 months, according to Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings.
"The rest of the nation ought to be going green with envy," Mr Jennings said.
"Almost half of the nation's residential Green Power users are in Victoria."
Mr Jennings said Victorians were leading the charge for green power.
More than 228,000 of the nation's almost 566,000 green energy customers were in Victoria, according to a Green Power Accreditation Program quarterly report.
"As the Brumby Government is leading the way in Australia in taking real steps to reduce greenhouse emissions, the Victorian public should be commended for rising to the challenge," Mr Jennings said.
Consumers can choose what proportion of their electricity they want to come from renewable sources.
Green energy adds up to $5 a week on the average bill for households who elect to go 100 per cent green.
The 43 accredited Green Power generators in Victoria use sources including biological mass, wind, solar and hydro.
The Victorian Government has set a renewable energy target of 10 per cent by 2016.
