In recent weeks the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) spies from New York University's Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) have used propaganda to push students of NYU to boycott the "Global Chinese Dance Competition." Now more people who used to be chairmen of CSSAs at various universities across the United States are beginning to speak out and present evidence of how the CCP controls overseas CSSAs and turns them into special spy agencies. Furthermore, the CCP has appointed spies on U.S. territory to extend its political power and instigate hatred, so as to sabotage American society.
During an interview with The Epoch Times on June 28, 2007, Mr. Tang Baiqiao, former student leader of the Tiananmen Democratic Student Movement in 1989 and Chairman of Chinese Peace and Democracy Alliance, pointed out that the CSSAs at universities in the United States also have a very important political task—to influence the American "China Experts." These experts are Americans that have a certain understanding of Chinese business and politics. They also directly influence American policies toward China.
For the past several years, the CCP has spent a large amount of money on this aspect, including providing research funding to many "China Experts," allowing this group of people to publish articles containing CCP agenda dealing with mainstream media, assisting it in hiding the true facts about mainland China while deceiving the American society.
Tang said this time, a non-governmental organization is to hold a classical dance competition to spread traditional Chinese culture, yet it was attacked by the CCP. Who can believe there are no ulterior motives or "Black Hands" behind these attacks? There are various Chinese activities in the United States, like karaoke competitions and pageants; some are even immoral. Why were there no attacks on those activities?
CSSA at Columbia University is CCP's United Front
From 2001 to 2003, Tang was a graduate student studying International Politics and Economic Development at Columbia University. He witnessed first hand how the Chinese consulate controls the CSSA.
Tang said, "At that time, I had many private contacts with people in the CSSA. They held various activities and often invited me."
According to Tang, many incidences showed that the CSSA at Columbia University is an organization where the CCP influences students overseas. The CSSA at Columbia University held regular meetings and all their important meetings at the Chinese consulate. The heads of the CSSA had regular dinners with the consular general. Each year, several big activities of the CSSA were all sponsored by the Chinese consulate. Each time someone from the consulate would deliver a talk. For instance, the Chinese consulate has paid $15,000 in rental fees for a big annual ball held at the Student Activity Center during the Chinese New Year.
Buying Off China Expert to Influence American Policies on China
Tang pointed out that the CSSAs at universities in the United States also have a very important political task—to influence the American "China Experts." According to Tang, the Chairman of the CSSA accompanied by people from the Chinese consulate would have dinners with these "China Experts."
Tang pointed out that these China Experts were basically against the CCP autocracy after 1989. Therefore, the CCP has spent a lot of effort on them. Since many of these China Experts are professors at American universities, to segregate, disintegrate and unite with China Experts is a very important task.
Tang thinks by doing so, the CSSA has helped the CCP a great deal. In other words, they directly harm the Chinese people because the Chinese people hope that the world can learn about the crimes of the CCP, but the CSSA was helping the CCP "beautify" its regime.
Tang said that the CSSA chairman of Columbia University at that time was paid $1,500 per month by the Chinese consulate and that they may be paid even more now.
Paid $30 for Welcoming CCP Leaders
Tang said that because the CSSA of Columbia University is controlled by the CCP, one of their important missions is to control students' mind by organizing students to regularly watch shows from mainland China, thus maintaining their enthusiasm of supporting the CCP. In addition, they also organize activities. For example, they have used various ways to motivate students to welcome CCP leaders when they visit America.
Once when Jiang Zemin visited the United States, Columbia University's CSSA sent emails to Chinese students saying that each student would get $30.00 if they go to welcome him. They can also bring their wife and kids, so a three-member family can earn a total $90.00. Once the notice was sent out, it caused many reactions. Most of the reactions were mocking and laughing at them.
Soon after that, another CCP leader visited the United States. The CSSA raised the amount to $70.00 for each person.
Illegal Behavior from CSSA Should Constitute Imprisonment or Deportation
Tang said, in American society, the CSSA's activities of collecting illegal expenses and slandering or even harming people, associations and the government agencies are either violating morality or against justice; they are even violating the laws. They will either become un-welcomed by the U.S., be sentenced to jail or kicked out of the country.
Tang emphasized that he was not saying frightening things just to raise alarm. Once the U.S. government has begun to take this seriously, those leaders of the CSSA would be made to pay for their evildoings. President Bush's speech in front of the Victims of Communism Memorial recently is actually a very strong signal to the CCP authorities and the CSSAs.
CCP Spies Should be Investigated and Punished
Tang said, "President Bush emphasized the evil nature of communism and mentioned the CCP by name a couple of times. He also mentioned that many people in mainland China have suffered and said directly that such a kind of evil has to be ended. I think this was the most direct and strongest American presidential speech since 1989."
Tang thought President Bush's speech would bring some influence afterwards. It delivered a strong blow to the will of those overseas CCP spies. He predicted that the CCP's overseas spies will be gradually investigated and punished.
CSSA Has Become the CCP's Secret Service and Is at the End of its Rope
Tang said both Chinese students in mainland China and overseas have been very open during the periods before and after 1989. At that time, when we saw those leaders of CSSAs who were very close to the CCP, we all had a strong aversion to these people and called them "Student Betrayers." In 1989, many students organized their own student unions and those CSSAs were holding no ground.
Tang said, "But the present situation of CSSAs makes me worried and distressed. They are no longer for the students' benefits. They are speaking and working for the CCP. Students who come overseas still haven't gotten rid of the control of the CCP. Those 'students betrayers' shouldn't be pleased with themselves and think they will have a good future. They have followed the wrong group."
CSSA Chairmen Should be Upright
Tang said, "The chairman of the New York University CSSA is afraid of taking phone calls. He didn't even want to admit his own identity when he did answer his phone. He also deleted his emails. How stupid it is to live a life like this! It is so sad. Gains cannot make up for losses while working for the CCP. They don't get benefits for themselves by harming other people."
Tang said, "Maybe they are doing this for the benefits or maybe they have been threatened by the CCP. In any way, they are now in a free world, I hope they will listen to those voices besides those of the CCP and hopefully their better nature will assert themselves, so that they can correct their errors and make a fresh start and become a real, upright person. Maybe they will be able to live honestly and kindheartedly with no more nightmares. This is the most important thing.
"I also hope that they can speak out to expose those backstage instigators to make up for their errors. If they can do things like this, we will open our arms to welcome them. In fact it was a wrong decision made in a moment of weakness."
