Chinese laptop maker Lenovo is recalling another 1,200 of its notebook PC batteries from the Australasian market, as part of its second global recall in six months.

Lenovo has issued a worldwide voluntary recall for about 208,000 Sanyo lithium-ion batteries that are used in its ThinkPad computers following five separate reports of the batteries overheating.

The warning comes six months after Lenovo and IBM recalled about 526,000 Sony lithium-ion batteries that were used in their notebooks, which was part of a much larger recall of the Sony batteries.

Lenovo's Australian spokeswoman Heather Jones said there were about 1,200 Sanyo batteries in the Australian and New Zealand market that were being recalled.

"A very strong external impact has an effect on the battery and may trigger an overheating incident if it's dropped at desk height and at a certain angle," Ms Jones said.

"It's a very containable risk and a relatively low risk but we take it seriously enough to say if there is any kind of risk, we'd prefer to withdraw that from the market."

Ms Jones said the recall only applied to nine-cell batteries used in the R60, T60 and Z series notebooks.

Lenovo is offering to replace the batteries for free to customers who bought these systems or an optional or replacement battery between November 2005 and February 2007.
