"The Spectacular – the show is great," said the former Chinese diplomat Chen Yonglin at the opening night of New Tang Dynasty Television's Chinese New Year Spectacular in Sydney on Thursday night.
"It was just fantastic. A lot of specialists – singers and dancers," said Mr Chen whose high profile defection grabbed headlines two years ago.
"The most favourite one actually I think was Mr Guimin Guan," he said in reference to one of China's most celebrated tenors in recent decades who is touring with the Spectacular.
"Also the performance about the erhu – the traditional Chinese instrument – the erhu combined with the piano… It was really is a good combination and good music."
"I believe most audiences enjoy much about the performance, especially a lot of other Chinese speakers," remarked Mr Chen.
"These performers are all Chinese speakers and they are top actors and actresses and I feel this will be a really successful show."
Mr Chen thought the Spectacular has a special energy. "I can feel that the music and the people, the actors and actresses, they are really concentrating, skilful and are really excellent."
The former diplomat agreed that the day when the Spectacular was able to perform in China would be a special day as it expressed the true values for being a human being and "this is a good message that the Chinese people should get.
"It's a fresh air for Chinese culture because in the past in China all the culture has been manipulated by the Communist authorities and the Chinese true…the real meaning of the Chinese culture has been totally polluted by the Communism."
In between enjoying his freedoms with his wife and daughter in Australia since defecting from the Chinese regime, Mr Chen has been a busy advocate for human rights and freedom in China. This weekend he is travelling to Melbourne to be a part of the Forum for a Democratic China.
