San Francisco's Union Square—normally a place for tourists and locals to unwind after a long day of shopping—was filled with colorful banners and balloons this past Saturday as a crowd of several hundred gathered to celebrate the 20 million Chinese people who have renounced their affiliation with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The rally featured speaker after speaker, all telling similar stories of the horrors perpetrated by the Chinese communist regime which has ruled the world's most populous country since 1949. The speeches were complemented with dance performances from young children, representing the purity and beauty of traditional Chinese culture before the CCP spoiled it, according to rally organizers.
The phenomenon of resigning from the CCP and its related organizations started just over two years ago after The Epoch Times published The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party in November of 2004. The series of editorials exposes a picture of the Chinese communist regime unknown to many in the Western world. Due to restrictions on the media and reporters operating in China, outsiders rarely get to know the real China, said speaker and Epoch Times staffer Maria Daly who worked there in the past.
"To me, it is not surprising that so many people have resigned from the Chinese Communist Party and its affiliated organizations. I can understand that phenomenon because I experienced it myself, when I read the book The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party … That book was such an eye-opener," said Daly.
She continued, "I lived in China for more than four years. In those years I experienced and witnessed many things when I worked as a photographer for a Western magazine. I was immersed in the media world and met many people working for the Western media and the [Chinese communist] regime's media. From many of the things I witnessed, there were things that were very obvious, such as the local media being completely controlled by the Chinese regime and being a source of their propaganda."
Daly also had a colleague in the media business who was deported for writing articles on sensitive topics not approved by the CCP. The climate of fear there prevents the free flow of information which we are accustomed to in the West, a point reinforced by Daly when she told of how the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) had its access to communication satellites revoked for airing a program revealing the true facts of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

Speaker Alex Ma represented the Northern California branch of the Global Service Center for Quitting the CCP. He grandly announced: "Today we are here to celebrate 20 million Chinese [people] quitting the CCP, the Chinese Communist Party and its associated organizations. It is a day worth celebrating, because there are 20 million people [whose] spirits have awakened from the CCP's cheating and bullying."
Mr. Ma didn't mince his words when he exclaimed: "Communism is the worst thing to happen to mankind. In its short period of existence, it claimed millions and millions of peoples' lives. In China alone [there have been] 80 million people killed by the CCP… The communist practice in the world is the biggest lie, has killed the largest number of people, and has degraded human traditional values the most."
Several other speakers covered a range of topics including the myth of China's economic success, the degradation of moral values by the CCP, as well as the horrific industry of organ harvesting. To read more about organ harvesting please see the report published by Canadian investigators Hon. David Kilgour and David Matas, Esq. on their website www.OrganHarvestInvestigation.net .
The event concluded around 12:00 noon followed by a march to Chinatown where a second rally was held at Portsmouth Square to a captive Chinese audience.
