BEIRUT—The Lebanese government on Wednesday approved a plan to deploy the army in south Lebanon in line with a U.N. resolution that halted fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, officials said.

They said the army would start deploying south of the Litani River early on Thursday. The army is charged with imposing its authority on the region and it would not permit the presence of any armed group in the area, they said.
