WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush said on Thursday that U.S. special forces, acting on tips from Iraqis, "delivered justice" to al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, Bush called Zarqawi's death a victory in the war on terrorism. He said U.S. special operations forces confirmed Zarqawi's location based on intelligence from Iraqis and "delivered justice to the most wanted terrorist in Iraq."
He said that the death of al-Zarqawi, offers Iraq's new government a chance to "turn the tide" in the war.
Bush said the death of the Jordanian-born Zarqawi "is a severe blow to al Qaeda," a victory in the war on terrorism, "and it is an opportunity for Iraq's new government to turn the tide in this struggle."
He said he believed sectarian violence in Iraq would continue. Bush said U.S. special operations forces confirmed Zarqawi's location based on intelligence from Iraqis and "delivered justice to the most wanted terrorist in Iraq."
Meanwhile, Al Qaeda in Iraq confirmed on Thursday the death of the group's leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi and vowed to continue the fight against the U.S. occupation and the Baghdad government, according to a Web statement.
