TORONTO — Two youths held on terror-related charges were denied bail in a Toronto-area court Tuesday, Canadian media reported.
The teenagers, part of a group of 17 suspects charged earlier this month with participating in a home-grown terrorist organization, will remain in custody after the ruling in a court in Brampton, Ontario, a bedroom community just outside of Toronto .
The two suspects cannot be identified because they were under 18 at the time of the alleged offenses, while a court ban prevents the reporting of evidence heard in court.
The pair were part of a group picked up in a police sweep at the beginning of the month.
Several in the group of 17 were charged with plotting bombings and training militants in what authorities say was an al Qaeda-inspired plan.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say the men took steps to acquire three tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer that can be mixed with fuel oil to produce a powerful explosive.
Other suspects will face bail hearings over the next few weeks.
