On April 20, at the welcome ceremony for Hu Jintao at the White House, Epoch Times reporter Dr. Wang Wenyi shouted at Hu Jintao and President Bush to end the Chinese communist regime's continued persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. In particular, she called for stopping the harvesting of organs from living Falun Gong practitioners. The U.S. prosecutors planned to charge Wang with "intimidating, coercing, threatening and harassing a foreign official." On June 21, after the trial was postponed three times, the U.S. government decided to drop the charges.
The U.S. government's decision is worth praising.
Wang Wenyi's action has a profound background. The Chinese Communist regime has persecuted Falun Gong practitioners for seven years now. The recent exposure of organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners at the Sujiatun concentration camp is even more appalling. Although Falun Gong adherents have exhausted every means to call for worldwide attention to the plight of the Falun Gong in China, the international community and media have not shown much concern for this atrocity.
Therefore, Dr. Wang chose this occasion to protest for the sake of millions of Falun Gong practitioners who have suffered persecution and murder, to appeal for their innocence and to call for an end to this persecution. Because Dr. Wang is innocent, the U.S. prosecutors decided to drop all charges. In doing so, they have protected the U.S. spirit of freedom of speech, one foundation on which the republic is based. This is an equitable and pleasing result.
However, the objective behind Dr. Wang's protests has not been achieved. Recent investigations have indicated that hospitals and transplant centers in China are carrying out transplant operations in a hurry. They are suspected of destroying evidence—killing those imprisoned where organ harvesting has taken place. Humanity's fundamental morality and basic dignity are being challenged. The silence and delayed reaction of the international community to the crime of organ harvesting from live bodies is leading to an irrevocable human catastrophe.
Therefore, we hope that the U.S. government will continue to pay attention to the real reasons behind her act. We urge the U.S. to conduct a comprehensive, independent investigation into the organ harvesting from live bodies carried out in concentration camps, labor camps, prisons and hospitals in China. We ask the U.S. to help uncover the truth and end this appalling crime against humanity.
Wang's protest clearly put the persecution of Falun Gong before international society once again. Currently, individuals devoted to justice throughout the world are launching a comprehensive investigation into the persecution. Well known attorneys, high ranking government officials and scholars are participating. In China, five attorneys, among them Gao Zhisheng, and many scholars risked enormous danger in requesting to be a part of the team investigating the persecution.
More than a month ago, Mr. David Kilgour, former Canadian Secretary of State (Asia Pacific), and renowned human rights attorney Mr. David Matas initiated a joint investigation to probe into organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners.
Three weeks ago, European Parliament Vice President Edward McMillan-Scott met two Falun Gong practitioners in Beijing to understand more about the persecution.
Indeed, the United States should be able to do more and better in stopping the persecution of human rights in China.
The United States and the world have all been looking forward to a humane, free, democratic China. The Chinese communist regime's wanton abuse of human rights and ruthless persecution of Falun Gong are completely opposed to this expectation. We should be clear: the communist regime does not represent China; it is certainly not the same as China.
The communist regime, in persecuting its own citizens, is acting like a tyrant. It is heading towards disintegration. Today China is moving towards the world, the world is moving towards China, and the world is becoming one. The entire free world has an unshakeable duty to safeguard the freedom and rights of the Chinese people and to oppose the appalling atrocities committed by the communist regime.
