The Sydney Fish Market is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost seafood markets. Being the largest seafood market in the southern Hemisphere and the second largest worldwide in terms of seafood variety, it holds the focal position within the Australian fishing and seafood industries.
The Sydney Fish Market continues to be a vibrant and authentic fisherman's market featuring a working fishing port, a wholesale fish market, a fresh food retail market, food and beverage outlets, a world-class seafood cooking school and on site tours providing visitors with a spirited harbour side experience.
Tours of the market enable visitors to explore its operations including the auction floor where one can inspect some of the 100 seafood varieties that feature in the markets each day.
In addition guests learn about the Dutch Auction system used to auction and purchase seafood product, view oyster shucking (the process of opening and accessing the fleshy centre of an oyster) and tour the retail arcade. Tours take between one and one and a half hours to complete, but if you want to view the auctions in progress, it's recommended you commence your tour bright and early at 7:00 am.
If you don't fancy a tour of the bustling markets or if getting up early to see the auctions isn't your cup of tea, you can improve your culinary skills by attending a class at the Sydney Seafood School which is regarded as one of the nation's premier cooking schools.
The school attracts more than 10,000 guests each year and provides a wide range of classes aimed at people of all levels of seafood-cooking proficiency.
The school provides excellent classes on how to cook with a wide range of seafood from conventional favourites such as mussels, octopus and crabs to the more obscure delights such as abalone, sashimi, pipis and sea-snails.
A typical class starts with a demonstration of the dish or dishes to be prepared. After which attendees, in groups of five try their hand at recreating the dishes they've seen demonstrated. Everyone then sits down to their seafood feast with a complimentary wine tasting from the fine selection of world-class wines offered by The Sydney Fish Market.
