Special Statement on the Hunger Strike In Support of Human Rights

By Gao Zhisheng
Special to the Epoch Times
Mar 17, 2006

Attorney Gao Zhisheng (Verna Yu/AFP)

It is more than 40 days since the start of the human rights hunger strike by Chinese citizens against violence and persecution. It commenced on February 4. Everywhere in China, policemen target innocent citizens with unrestrained violence, and the people's suffering is beyond tolerance and the path to resolving these conflicts through the judicial system has been totally cut off. As a consequence, the Chinese people are forced to use the most primitive ways to express their appeals in the midst of 21st century human civilization. Rational, peaceful, and legal communication of civilian's wishes was brutally suppressed by a totally irrational, inhuman, sinister minded, authoritarian regime. The oppressor shows disregard for the morals of human civilization, wantonly and rapidly adding to its evil record of several dozen years of ravaging the Chinese nation.

Up till now, not only has this system not expressed a shred of kindness towards such rational, peaceful appeals made by its people, on the contrary it has responded persistently and blatantly with gangster-type brutal violence, much less talk about any signs of concession! Yet it has never been our intention to be at odds irrationally. Furthermore, we do not want to create an opportunity for the oppressor to continue its display of violence and hatred. Therefore, after careful consideration, we have decided to make the following special statement in regards to the human rights hunger strike carried out in phases and under certain conditions: Firstly, I declare that everything stated in my three open letters on the government's illegal, extremely brutal persecution of innocent followers of a belief for the past seven years, is true and call upon governments to form a truth investigation committee made up of civilians to carry out a thorough investigation, publish investigation reports from time to time, and at the end of each investigation pursue and punish all those who violated China's laws, especially criminal law.

Secondly, immediately stop all actions in violation of basic laws such as kidnapping, arresting, placing under house arrest, surveillance, harassment, and detention in labor camps of innocent Chinese citizens, stop the use of violence on individuals by policemen, unconditionally release all those kidnapped i.e., Hu Jia, Chen Guangcheng, Qi Zhiyong, Ouyang Xiaorong, Ni Yulan, Guo Feixiong, Li Junfeng, and Liu Xinjuan (illegally detained in Shanghai mental institution), and free Ma Wendu, Wen Haibo, Li Aiyan and others placed under house arrest illegally.

Thirdly, release student Liu Xifeng from Lanzhou University, stop harassing his classmates and schoolmates and let them return to their normal study routine as soon as possible! The Chinese government has always claimed to be a civilized government. I am only making the above requests in a civilized manner as a citizen. Besides, these appeals are part of the constitutional law expected of and should be upheld by the government. Yet in China, what people see is completely the opposite. Some actions are not only against Chinese constitutional law, it is also in total disregard of moral values recognized by humanity. Even worse, the absurdity and imperviousness to reason manifested by certain actions of the policy makers and law enforcers is a humiliation to the entire nation! The government has never been reasonable! As soon as the above conditions are met, I, for one, will stop the hunger strike immediately.

On March 17, 2006, written in my Beijing home surrounded by secret police.
