BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - The first time I heard about Yu N Mi was through the praise of a gluttonous friend. The claim was that this Japanese restaurant provides the best sushi in Beverly Hills.
My curiosity was piqued enough that I decided to give it a try. The next day I tried to make a reservation, only to find they were all booked. This increased my curiosity to find out why Yu N Mi was so popular.
I finally booked a table and when I got there, I was a little bit disappointed. The room was so tiny and crowded.
The place was buzzing with happy diners, who ate in close quarters amidst the light blue painted walls. However, after the food was served, I had no doubt why this restaurant wins its honor. Indeed, it lived up to its billing as "the best sushi restaurant in Beverly Hills."
The first dish was the Fried Calamari Salad, which sent a shock to my taste buds. A mixture of salad, crispy calamari, and light sweet sesame sauce, is a surprise for your stomach when the hot calamari and cold salad are mixed together.
Next was the Albacore Tataki, the most impressive dish. It consists of six slices of albacore marinated in a special sauce and seared rare. The taste is even better than sashimi as it was so uniquely flavored and juicy.
Seize the opportunity to try the Fried Soft-Shell Crab Sushi. Soft shell crab is this season's fare. Swallowing the crab shell with the soft crabmeat is a joy of summer.
The last dish was the colorful and shining Pink Scallop Dynamite with cheese on top. The scallops just melt in your mouth. They are a perfect land - sea combination, as you can taste the freshness of the sea in the scallops and the flavor of the farm in the cheese. Prices range between $12-15 for lunch combinations and the dinner menu consists of sushi and appetizers, which run about $35 per person.
I left Yu N Mi feeling full, satisfied, and anticipating my next visit. The Baked Lobster Handroll looked so yummy and irresistible. It will definitely be my first choice next time.
Next time? I had better make the reservation right now.
