Commentary: Most Crafty Official in China: Zeng Qinghong

The Epoch Times
Translated from the Chinese edition
Jul 03, 2004

In Chinese history, there have been innumerable loyal officials and people worthy of praise, as well as some crafty villains. The number of crafty villains has greatly increased since the Chinese Communist Party took power. Jiang Zemin usurped the highest position, taking advantage of the Tiananmen Square student massacre in June 1989, and meanwhile, his right hand man Zeng Qinghong has become the most crafty official in Chinese history.

Jiang Zemin came to Beijing from his former post as the mayor of Shanghai and promoted Zeng Qinghong as his top adviser. Zeng has been known for being sinister and ruthless. In the Deng Xiaoping era, Zeng quietly collected material with which he could black mail Deng’s family members. After helping Jiang get rid of Yang Shangkun, the former commander and chief of China’s army, and Yang's brother, Zeng sent to jail Chen Xitong, the former Party Secretary of Beijing who belonged to the “Beijing group.” Quietly and rapidly, Zeng Qinghong cultivated the "Shanghai group” using his power as the head of the CCP administration.

After Deng Xiaoping died, Zeng helped Jiang Zemin expel Qiao Shi, the former head of the People's Representative Committee. Since then, Zeng has actively established his black mail file for all the CCP officials, containing records of their corruption. Then in the name of anticorruption, he manipulated these officials and had them work for the Shanghai group.

There are two kinds of politicians, those who can sacrifice individual honor or disgrace in order to persist in the principles that they believe in, like Sun Yat-Sen, Lincoln, and Reagan; and those opportunists who do not really have any political ideology and are willing to trade principle for their fortune and career. Zeng Qinghong no doubt exemplifies the opportunist category.

After taking the post of head of the CCP's Hong Kong and Macao Project Coordination Group, Zeng once ordered his younger brother Zeng Qingzhun to criticize China’s pro-democracy faction. However, while touring Tunisia, not only did he clearly state, "the Central Committee has no conflicts with the pro-democracy faction," but also, he, for the first time, invited Hong Kong reporters to a tea party to show his interest in communicating with Hong Kong media. This kind of political smoke and mirrors was used to confuse naďve people so that they would regard Zeng as the hope of Hong Kong, and to create upheaval in the pro-democracy faction.

In Jiang's hysterical suppression of Falun Gong, Zeng has been supplying ideas for his "master" and persecuting, even to death, innocent people who just want to do exercises and meditation. After realizing that Falun Gong could not be eliminated in three months as planned, Zeng thought that he might have an opportunity to make some money off the persecution. Zeng is said to have told a Falun Gong practitioner outside China in private that if he was the president of China, he would rehabilitate Falun Gong. However, Falun Gong practitioners are particularly ridged about doing things by principle and refused to make any deal with Zeng. Later, lawsuits were filed against Zeng and Jiang. Zeng became so mad that he ordered the Chinese security agency to set up a task force to assassinate the founder of Falun Gong.

On June 28, 2004, an attempted murder occurred in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Falun Gong practitioners who just arrived from Australia were shot at. The media reported that these practitioners came to South Africa with the intention of filing a lawsuit against the visiting Zeng. This shooting, which Zeng was undoubtedly behind, again reveals Zeng's nature.

Considering Zeng's behavior and the CCP's history, it is not surprising to see him using this kind of tactic. Zeng and his gang have been following the principle of "those with me prosper, those against me perish." After exhausting all his schemes, he wants to simply kill off any opposition.
