FAQs

Can I submit an article that has already been published?

Yes! You may submit a previously published work, but it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the right to re-publish the work. If you are planning on submitting a previously-published work, you must disclose all details of your work’s prior publication (link to article and/or other necessary details). The Epoch Times reserves the right to confer with the other publication to verify that entry is eligible for publication by The Epoch Times. It is your responsibility to make sure that entry in this competition does not interfere with your opportunity for publication elsewhere.

Can I submit an article that I have previously entered in a different contest?

Yes! If the work was published or received distinction in the previous contest, however, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the right to re-publish it.

Can my article cover more than one theme?

Sure. Feel free to explore as many as you wish.

Does my story have to be based on real-life events?

Yes! All articles submitted and any supporting media must be of true, real-life events. All submissions will be subject to screening and authentication prior to publishing.

Do the events have to be current?

Not necessarily. Although an event with current relevance is preferable, a great story is a great story no matter when it happened. Alternatively, if the event happened in the past you can give it current relevance (e.g. 20 years later they’re still happily married).

How will I be notified if I win a prize?

All Editor’s Choice winners will be notified by email that their article has been selected. When we publish your article on our Facebook page, we will ‘tag’ you in the post. Watch for the notification!

If you chose not to disclose your Facebook ID to us, you will have to keep an eye out for your article to appear on our Facebook page.

Winners of the Grand Prizes will be contacted via email, an article announcing the winners will be published online, and you’ll be considered for print publication.

Do I need to have a Facebook account?

We highly recommend you provide us with your Facebook ID. We will tag your Facebook profile to let you know when your Facebook post goes live. If we do not have your Facebook ID, this will not be possible.

When will the Editor’s Choice winners be notified?

Editor’s Choice winners will be notified within 14 days of your deadline. Your article will be posted online and to Facebook soon after (how soon will depend on how many winners we have—we have to stagger publication a little bit), which will initiate the Reader’s Choice stage.

When will the Grand Prizes be announced?

The Grand Prizes will be awarded at the end of the entire competition period, after the last Reader’s Choice stage ends. Results will be announced by the end of September 2017.

Who can participate in the Inspiring the World Competition?

The Inspiring the World Writing Competition is open to persons 18+ years of age in any location around the world, except employees of Epoch Media Group, their close relatives, and anyone otherwise connected with the organization or judging of the competition.

Is creative writing acceptable?

No. In this particular competition, we will be looking for journalistic writing.

Can I submit more than one work?

Yes, you may submit up to 5 pieces per submission period (each period lasting two weeks). You will have to complete a new submission form for each piece.

What are the size limitations for in-text pictures in my article?

At least 1 photo is mandatory and must be around 1280 x 900 in size. Supporting photos and videos are optional. In-text pictures must be 640 x 450 or larger. At least 300 dpi is preferred.

Are there any limitations in terms of fonts or other formatting?

Any standard font and formatting is fine (e.g. Times New Roman, 12 point font). If your article is published on the web, it will be converted to The Epoch Times’ style.

How will I know when my submissions have been evaluated?

All Editor’s Choice winners will be notified via email following judging. Grand Prize winners will be notified via email after the final contest deadline on Sept. 1, 2017.

Can I edit the entry that I have already submitted?

No, once you submit your article, you cannot edit your submission. Please ensure all submissions are edited and proofread before submitting. Do not resubmit edited versions of articles you have already submitted.

Are pen names allowed?

No. Pen names are not allowed.

Who are the judges of the contest?

The Editor’s Choice awards are awarded by a judging panel consisting of skilled and qualified editors at The Epoch Times. In the Reader’s Choice stage, your article will be judged according to the performance of your article on Facebook (ie. number of reactions, number of clicks, etc.). Grand Prizes are awarded based on total points earned in the Editor’s Choice and the Reader’s Choice stages.

How do I receive the prize money if I win?

Grand Prize winners will be contacted individually by phone or email for instructions on claiming the prize money.

Can I apply if I am not from the US?

Yes! The Inspiring the World Competition is open to U.S. as well as non-U.S. residents (except residents of countries/states in which the terms and conditions of this competition are prohibited by law).
