How much of an improvement is the GoPro HERO4 Silver Edition over its predecessor, the GoPro HERO3+ Silver Edition?

Whether its shooting your own action movie, capturing crazy stunts and extreme sports, GoPro is the action camera of choice to capture those first-person, high-quality, ultra wide-angle shots.

The GoPro HERO3+ even bagged a Technology and Engineering Emmy in 2013 for breaking new grounds in camera technology, helping “television production professionals to capture engaging perspectives that were never before possible.”

Not resting on their laurels, GoPro is releasing the GoPro HERO4 cameras, and the specifications for the Silver and Black Editions are out.

See how the GoPro HERO4 Silver Edition measures up with the GoPro HERO3+ Silver Edition in a number of key areas.

Video

The GoPro HERO4 Silver Edition will be able to shoot videos with a max resolution of 1080p at 60fps or 720p at 120fps with an ultra-wide viewing angle.

This is identical to the GoPro HERO3+ Silver Edition, which boasts the same video specs.

The HERO4 does feature a new sensor and improved processor though.

The HERO4 Silver Edition can capture photos at 12 mega-pixels at 30fps in burst bode with a fixed f/2.8 aperture. Other features include time-lapse (0.5 seconds to 60 seconds intervals) and night lapse (10 second to 30 second exposure times with up to 60 minute intervals).

The HERO3+ Silver Edition is slightly poorer when it comes to taking photos, as it is only capable of capturing pictures at 10 mega-pixels at 10fps in burst mode with a fixed f/2.8 aperture. It has similar time-lapse features.

Clearly, if you are looking to take better quality photos between the two GoPro camera, the HERO4 Silver Edition is a clear winner.

Storage

Both feature microSD card slots.

Battery

The HERO4 Silver Edition features a rechargeable battery, but GoPro hasn’t released details on it yet.

The HERO3+ Silver Edition uses a 1180mAH rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Connectivity

For those who don’t fancy cables, the HERO4 Silver Edition is the more logical choice because it has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, whereas the HERO3+ Silver Edition only has Wi-Fi.

Price and Release Date

The HERO3+ Silver Edition is available for $299.99 from the GoPro official website.

Being a newer model, the HERO4 Silver Edition is always going to cost more, and will be sold for $399.99 when it becomes available on Oct0ber 5.
