Tale of the Tape…
Tale of the Tape…
2014 US Open Pinheurst #2

The 2014 US Open marks the first time the men’s and women’s national championships is held on the same course in the same year. Both are also scheduled for the first time in a back-to-back time frame – the men’s starting June 12 and concluding traditionally on Father’s Day — June 15. The women’s event begins June 19 and concludes three days later on June 22.

Each event is contested over 72-holes with 18-hole rounds played each day. If playoffs happen to resolve ties — the format for both is identical — 18-hole playoffs — extending the event one additional day. The USGA is the only sponsoring group to use a full round in a major championship to settle a playoff. Should a tie still exist — the format reverts to a hole-by-hole sudden victory format. The last time that happened was in 2008 when Tiger Woods won his 3rd US Open in an exciting play-off — going 19-holes before besting Rocco Mediate.

Although the men and women will play the same course — the overall yardage each faces is different reflecting the increased distances the men are capable in handling. The numbers listed below will vary depending on weather conditions and specific hole / tee locations used. For the men Pinehurst #2 will range from 7,200 to 7,500 yards. For the women — yardages will vary between 6,400 to 6,600 yards. Hole #3 and #13 will also be of interest — in recent US Opens the USGA has seen fit to include possible driveable par-4 holes — raising the stakes for the players and adding to their decision-making chores when playing.
