Shen Yun’s Stories ‘Very Interesting,’ Says Chief Surgeon & President

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Shen Yun Performing Arts played the second of two shows at the beautiful Shea’s Performing Arts Center on Friday evening, delighting audiences with its lavish production showcasing China’s traditional culture and values.

Among the audience was Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, chief surgeon and president of global referral & assessment for transplant with M.E.D.-V.A.R, a medical company headquartered in Manhattan.

“I liked the dance and the colouration,” said Dr. Ibrahim, adding that he particularly enjoyed the piece Ne Zha Churns the Sea, which tells the story of a young boy with supernatural powers who saves his village from the marauding Dragon King.

“The soundtrack and the tricks on the screen—I really liked it,” he said.

Dr. Ibrahim was referring to Shen Yun’s signature digital backdrops, which are animated in order to help tell the various stories from China’s past and present being played out on stage.

He said he found those stories “very interesting. I liked all of them.”

New York-based Shen Yun showcases both classical Chinese dance and folk and ethnic dances that pay tribute to the vast Middle Kingdom’s many diverse regions and ethnicities.

An art form passed down and enriched over thousands of years, classical Chinese dance has deep roots in traditional Chinese ideas about beauty and grace. It is also physically demanding, incorporating dramatic flips and tumbling techniques that share a common ancestry with martial arts.

Dr. Ibrahim said he enjoyed the synchronicity in the dances, and that he appreciated “the hard work and the team effort” that went into the dancing.
