BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom—Shen Yun Performing Arts took one of its full-house audience members “into a golden moment” at the ICC Birmingham on Tuesday, April 15.

Ms. Kaitiff, a retired cardiac theatre nurse and midwife, said, “It was just pure fantasy. … I could have another two hours.”

“It was just lovely: the performance, the artistry, the colors. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was beautiful, really lovely.”

New York-based Shen Yun encompasses the world’s premier classical Chinese dance companies, unique orchestras, and bel canto singers, as well as a stage-length digital interactive backdrop.

The company’s aim is to revive the 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture that has been lost under communist rule.

“I went for the enchantment of it, and the beauty, and it’s so lovely to see that still existing,” Ms. Kaitiff said.

She had attended the performance with Terry Nicholson, a commercial pilot. Mr. Nicholson also immersed himself in the show. “Oh, it was fantastic. It was absolutely wonderful, and an enchanting performance by everyone.

“The choreography was very, very wonderful, and at the same time it gave a fantastic idea of what 5,000 years of Chinese culture is all about. So it was absolutely great,” he said.

Ms. Kaitiff marvelled at the two-stringed erhu, which was a new instrument to her. “I’d never heard it before, it was just gorgeous. It was beautiful,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine two strings giving that sound. … It uplifted the heart completely.”

Mr. Nicholson said, “You leave with a spring in your step. It was such an uplifting programme.”

“You feel really happy,” he said, laughing, “because of the excellent performances by everybody, the depth of the music, and the wonderful choreography.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts continues on to Dublin’s Convention Centre for performances on April 19 and 20.
