COLUMBUS, Ohio—Dr. Albert May and his wife, Ingrid, have seen Shen Yun Performing Arts twice and will see it again if they get the chance. “I think it’s very, very moving,” Dr. May said. The couple saw the performance at the Ohio Theatre on April 15.
Based in New York, Shen Yun aims to revive China’s divinely inspired culture through the performing arts, according to its website. Shen Yun’s performances feature mainly classical Chinese dance accompanied by an orchestra that combines classical Western and Chinese instruments.
Dr. May retired from pediatric practice 12 years ago, and was wearing a special commemorative pin honoring his 37 years of practice. His wife, originally from Germany, taught German before retirement. Since Dr. May retirement, they travel a great deal, including to China.
Remarking on the quality of the performance, Mrs. May used many superlatives: “It’s just outstanding, gorgeous; it’s beautiful.”
Fans of Bach and versed in classical music, Dr. May described the music as not “all pentatonic and not all black keys.” He said that the tonality of the singing is Western, and not harsh.
But what Dr. May appreciated perhaps the most was the animated backdrops. “The melding of the television screen and then the actor, in action, I think, it’s just remarkable,” he said.
The “digital backdrop designs complement and synchronize all aspects of the performance: the characters, color of the costumes, specific dance movements, props, lighting, the story being told, particular notes played by the orchestra, and special audio effects,” the website states.
“It’s just almost unbelievable. It’s very, very well done,” Mrs. May said.
“As she said, we are very, very pleased, and we’ll come back … when it returns,” Dr. May said.
