SEATTLE—Shen Yun graced the stage of Seattle’s Marion Oliver McCaw Hall on April 5. In attendance was Michael Brown, doctor and founder of Marina Medical in 2003.
“I was very impressed with just the beauty and the technical quality,” Dr. Brown said. “The music particularly intrigued me because I am a musician myself. But I just thought it was a spectacular performance.”
Shen Yun uses various aspects of the performing arts to revive China’s 5,000-year-old culture. Each performance boasts an orchestra that consists of the grandeur and precision of Western orchestration plus the expressiveness of Chinese instruments.
Overall, Dr. Brown said that to more fully appreciate what he had just witnessed, “It’s going to take a little bit of time to digest.”
He also noted that Shen Yun’s “spectacular display” was far different from what many people are “so desensitized to.” He said, “[It’s] so much of what we encounter on a day-to-day basis that you have to stand back and think again.”
“This is really an amazing performance—these people are highly accomplished, and it was just beautiful,” he added.
After seeing the performance, many audience members find themselves awestruck at Shen Yun’s vivid and genuine portrayal of traditional Chinese culture. Dr. Brown appreciated his opportunity as well.
“This is the real deal, these are real people, this is real time, and they’re doing real things,” he said. “This is pretty impressive to me.”
