A “Full Pink Moon” is taking place in April 2014, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.
“April’s Full Moon, Full Pink Moon, heralds the appearance of the moss pink, or wild ground phlox—one of the first spring flowers. It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon,” it says.
The full moon will take place on April 15 at 3:42 a.m. ET.
The “Pink Moon” is s traditional Native American name for the full moon that takes place in April.
However, it doesn’t mean that the moon will actually be pink or red.
According to the Almanac, the name of the lunar event comes from the springtime bloom of the moss pink flower.
A total lunar eclipse will also occur during the full moon on April 15.
The April 15 moon is also called the “Paschal Full Moon,” which is the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Easter was usually celebrated on the Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon.
“Pink Moon” is also the name of British singer-songwriter Nick Drake’s final album before he killed himself in 1974.
