LOUISVILLE, Ky.— “It was very beautiful, and interesting to see,” Mary Mimon would say to her friends about Shen Yun Performing Arts. She saw the classical Chinese music and dance performance at the Kentucky Center’s Whitney Hall, on March 22, the first of its two performances in Louisville this year.

New York-based Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by artists seeking to bring back the traditions and virtues of ancient China.

“Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,” according to the company’s website.

Ms. Mimon, the owner and lead writer for Words Fresh, was particularly interested in the dances she saw Shen Yun perform. “I was particularly taken at how strong the dancers are, men and women, and how flexible they are,” she said, also commenting on how expressively they danced.

Shen Yun showcases classical Chinese dances, one of the most expressive and demanding dance systems in the world.”

“Seeing the women depicted from thousands of years ago dancing, caring for themselves, and being beautiful” was something that touched her.

As a marketing expert, she noticed how well the dancers engaged the audience; they “were smiling and looking at the audience,” she said.

The visual aspects appealed to Ms. Mimon as well. “It’s beautiful. There’re a lot of very beautiful costumes,” Ms. Mimon said.

Each year Shen Yun produces an entire new show, from the choreography and music, to the hundreds of handmade costumes.

“Every costume in a Shen Yun performance is presented with brilliant colors, displaying a splendid spectacle—from the Tang Dynasty’s ‘Raiment of Rainbows and Feathers’ to imperial dragon robes, phoenix coronets, and cloud capes,” the website states.
