Center Guild Member Calls Shen Yun ‘Amazing’

COSTA MESA, Calif.—Shen Yun Performing Arts’ New York Company held a show Thursday night at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, March 13. Among those in attendance was Ms. Mike Nielsen, a member of the Segerstrom Guild group.

“It’s lovely. It’s absolutely lovely,” Ms. Nielsen said of the performance.

Established in 2006, New York-based Shen Yun is a non-profit organization that has sought to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture through the performing arts. Having reached millions of people across roughly 20 countries and over 100 cities, Shen Yun is now widely regarded as a global phenomenon.

Ms. Nielsen, who attended the show with her friend Sally, hoped to catch the orchestra’s diverse assortment of instruments.

“[We] love to see the instruments,” she explained.

According to the Shen Yun website, the orchestra is a combination of a Western philharmonic and traditional Chinese instruments, such as the erhu, pipa and suona.

Ms. Nielsen was also very pleased with the show’s dancing.

“They’re all such fabulous dancers,” she said. “They were probably dancing since they were children.”

As the website states, “Shen Yun and its mission have drawn top talent from around the world; many artists are winners of international competitions in dance, choreography, and music.”

One aspect of the performance that seemed to be a particular highlight for Ms. Nielsen was the digital stage backdrop.

“That was just amazing,” she said in reference to the backdrop. “It caught me off guard.”

“With state-of-the-art graphics technology,” describes the website, “Shen Yun’s digital-backdrop team creates vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one.

Ms. Nielsen was very appreciative toward Shen Yun for her “lovely” experience.

“You’re wonderful,” she said in praise of the performers. “You’re absolutely wonderful.”
