Bill Nye Dead? Nope, Hoax Claims ‘Science Guy’ Died; ‘God Made Me Do It’ Video Dupes Many

Bill Nye “The Science Guy” has not died, but Internet pranksters want you to think otherwise. The hoax says that he was killed.

On Twitter and Facebook, a large number of people thought that he died

“Bill Nye Found Dead. Suspect apprehended claims ‘God made me do it!’” reads one tweet.

Another wrote that “people make me sick… Bill Nye Found Dead. Suspect apprehended claims “God made me do it!”

Tweeted one, “Did someone kill Bill Nye?!”

The hoax was spread on YouTube with the “God Made Me Do It” headline.

However, the video only contains scenes from the Rick Astley video “Never Gonna Give You Up” in 1987.

The video is used as part of the popular Internet prank “Rickrolling” as part of a bait and switch tactic.

The hoax apparently was drawing on the debate between Nye and Ken Ham several days ago on creation versus evolution.

AP Update:  Bill Nye defends evolution in Kentucky debate

PETERSBURG, Ky. (AP) — TV’s “Science Guy” Bill Nye says there are infinite discoveries yet to be made about the universe and how we got here.

Ken Ham, the man Nye traveled to Kentucky to debate Tuesday night, says all those answers are already in the Bible.

Over the course of the two-and-a-half hour debate at Kentucky’s Creation Museum, both men had plenty to say, but neither left convinced of the other’s argument.

Nye, true to his TV persona, delivered a passionate and animated defense of science and challenged the teachings on display at the museum that the earth is 6,000 years old and man once lived alongside dinosaurs.

“If we accept Mr. Ham’s point of view … that the Bible serves as a science text and he and his followers will interpret that for you, I want you to consider what that means,” Nye said. “It means that Mr. Ham’s word is to be more respected than what you can observe in nature, what you can find in your backyard in Kentucky.”

Nye said scientists can track the age of stars based on their distance from earth.

“How could there be billions of stars more distant than 6,000 years, if the world is only 6,000 years old?” Nye asked Ham.

After a question from an audience member about where atoms and matter comes from, Nye said scientists are making discoveries on that front every day.

Ham, founder of the Creation Musuem, said he already knows the answer.

“Bill, I want to tell you, there is a book that tells where atoms come from, and its starts out, ‘In the beginning …,'” Ham said, referring to the Bible’s creation story.

Ham showed the theater audience of about 800 people — and those watching the debate live on the Internet — slides to back up his assertions.

“The Bible is the word of God,” Ham said. “I admit that’s where I start from.”

He also introduced scientists who he said were creationists.

“I believe the word ‘science’ has been high-jacked by secularists,” Ham said.

Regardless of the outcome, the debate was a boon for the museum, which opened in 2007 after being built on $27 million worth of private donations. Ham said his Facebook page on Tuesday had hundreds of thousands of views.

“I think it shows you that the majority of people out there, they’re interested in this topic, they want to know about this, they don’t want debate shut down,” Ham said before the debate.

Some scientists were critical of Nye for agreeing to debate the head of a Christian ministry that is dismissive of evolution.

Jerry Coyne, a professor of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago, wrote on his blog that “Nye’s appearance will be giving money to organizations who try to subvert the mission Nyehas had all his life: science education, particularly of kids.” Coyne pointed out that the Creation Museum will be selling DVDs of the event.

The museum quickly sold out its 800 seats, thanks in part to Nye’s celebrity as the former host of “Bill Nye The Science Guy,” a 1990s science education TV program that is still played in some classrooms. Some people in the audience wore “Bill Nye is my home boy” T-shirts. A few more fans wore a bow tie and Nye’s signature lab coat.

Nye waded into the evolution debate in an online video in 2012 that urged parents not to pass their religious-based doubts about evolution on to their children. Ham rebutted Nye’s statements with his own online video with comments from scientists who work at the museum.

Since the debate was announced in early January, attention has been heaped on the Creation Museum and its directing ministry, Answers in Genesis, which is raising money for a theme park built around a replica of Noah’s Ark. The project was announced in 2011 but fundraising has been slow and its groundbreaking date is in limbo.

The Creation Museum said visitors from 29 states bought seats for the debate.

Ham believes the Earth was created 6,000 years ago and that the Bible tells the factual account of the universe’s beginnings and the creation of humans. Nye said he, and the rest of the scientific community, believe the Earth was created by a big bang billions of years ago and people have evolved over time.

“I just want to remind us all there are billions of people in the world who are deeply religious, who get enriched by the wonderful sense of community by their religion,” said Nye, who wore his trademark bow tie. “But these same people do not embrace the extraordinary view that the Earth is somehow only 6,000 years old.”

Nye said technology keeps the U.S. ahead as a world leader and he worried that if creationism is taught to children the country would fall behind.

Where did the life come from? From where did our ancestors arise? From an
advanced ape from a marsupial from a rodent from a reptile from an amphibian
from a crustacean from a sponge from a mushroom from a fungus from an amoeba
from a virus from a pool of muck? We’re we ‘grandfathered’ by ‘abiogenesis,’
the spontaneous chemical start up of life?

Or were we fashioned by a Creator?

Those are choices we are torn between today, and the majority are leaning
towards the muck, convinced by the glib arguments of ‘logical’ people.

Yes, let us be logical. What are the known and undisputed facts? Not theories,
but the actual realities that we know and reasonably prove.

    following facts are evident.

The simplest form of life is a single cell.

Viruses seem more simple…yet need their own complexity as well
as the complexity of the simplest cell to exist and reproduce. Hence it is more
likely they would be derivative than originative.

    In this simplest single cell,

If you pull up a simple diagram (i.e., oversimplified and not
even seeing all the details) of a cell what do you see?

A wall and/or membrane, cilia and/or flagellum, cytoplasm,
mitochondrions, microfilaments, lysosome, ribosomes, lysosomes, rough and
smooth endoplasmic reticulum, nucleolus. 10 basic things that have functions,
have additional parts, are each made up of various components, abut a hundred
or so of which are made either by the cell itself, or its parent cells.

    * The wall or membrane (in prokaryotes) is made of one or more
layers, complex (made of many types of molecules, organically designed) enough
to allow nutrients in, waste out. To be life, the design of the cell wall has
to a) be functional and b) be designed by the genetic material of this particular
cell. Without this, the cell dissolves.

    * Cilia and flagellum are organelles comprised of and using
complex proteins like ATP (designed by living things) to move in tandem to
    propel some cells.

    * Cytoplasm is made of the “body” of the cell, and contains
the cytosol and the organelles. Cytosol, the gel-like substances in which all
other parts “float” is comprised of waters, salts, and organic (made
by living processes) material, varying in consistency from outer to inner.
Without the cytoplasm the cell would die. To be life, the design of the
cytoplasm has to a) be functional and b) be designed by the genetic material of
    this particular cell.

    * Mitochondria have at least 4 parts and like the cell wall
allow only molecules needed for its job and are transported by microfilaments
as needed within the cell. They produce ATP at a greater rate than other cell
parts. Not all cells have mitochondria. But the equivalent function in other
cells HAS to exist, and be hardwired into the cells.

    * Microfilaments. Holds parts of cells together, responsible for
protein movement, ergo movement of organelles, mitochondria, cilia and
flagellum, has to be present for cell division. Made of actin, an organically
created protein. Without it is a dead cell. To be life, the design of the
microfilaments have to a) be functional and b) be designed by the genetic
    material of this particular cell.

    * Ribosomes are found in all living cells. It is a complex meld
of organic (made by living things) RNA and proteins that produce the various
proteins. Without them the cell dies. To be life, the design of the ribosomes
have to a) be functional and b) be designed by the genetic material of this
    particular cell.

    * Lysosomes are organelles that “digest” waste
products. The necessary parts are primarily created by ribosomes, without which
there would be no lysosomes; these too are multi-layered and complex, depending
on other parts of the cell to exist, without which the cell would die. In
plants this function may be performed by vacuoles, which are enclosed by
membranes. Without some of the functions the cell dies. To be life, the design
of the mysosomes or equivalent have to a) be functional and b) be designed by
the genetic material of this particular cell.

    * Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER) metabolizes lipid fats and
carbohydrates and other sometimes toxic elements. Rough ER creates proteins.
They can alter one to the other depending on metabolic need. Some plants use
other equally complex systems, such as photosynthesis, the Calvin Cycle (using
ATP and PRE-EXISTING organic compounds, or ), instead, but whichever case, the
fully functioning system is required without which the cell would die. To be
life, the design of the ER or equivalents have to a) be functional and b) be
designed by the genetic material of this particular cell.

    * Nucleolus is the cell part that contains DNA. In its simplest
form, it is a complex, two-part mesh of guide RNA, other RNA and DNA and other
proteins that control protein production throughout the cell, the very
production of the cell, and procreation. It is the chicken AND the egg, so to
speak. It is placed in a very specific location of the cell called the
nucleolar organizing region, which is actually a genetically determined
location! Again we see the capability of this part of the cell had to
simultaneously come into being, match other parts that were coming together at
that instant, and be genetically wired to replicate every one of these
functions in other progeny cells. Without this particular, complex function,
the cell would both die and be unable to reproduce life. To be life, the design
of the nucleolus has to a) be functional and b) be designed by the genetic
    material of this particular cell.

Now, remember this is a total oversimplification of the simplest
cells. 10 minimal parts requiring at least dozens of simultaneous functions
requiring scores of organic combinations almost all of which is found nowhere
    outside a living cell.

    Those are the known facts.

And Christians are scoffed at because we refuse to believe all
these events happened simultaneously by accident in one of a dozen hypothetical
ways, none of which could account for the actual complexity of the simplest
    living cell.

Uh, no. It did not happen accidentally, and the REAL blind faith
    is to believe it did.

The simplest cell alive is an organism as complex on a molecular
level as any mammal is on a cellular level.

On a cellular level, we have skins made of three levels, we have
organs and muscle and bone, we have brains, nervous systems and reproductive

We did not spontaneously generate, we did not crawl out of muck
like Swamp Thing as fully functional organisms.

On a molecular level, cells have walls of three levels, they
have cytoplasm bodies with organelles, they have cohesive structures,
“skeletons,” they have functions acting like muscles, they have
nucleus and reproductive centers of great complexity.

They did not form by abiogenesis, which is a fancy relabeling of
that ridiculous superstitious concept of “spontaneous generation.”

A body whose cells are still living can sometimes be revived.

A cell once dead still has all the right molecular ingredients,
but if it dies, ain’t coming back. The life is gone, and when enough of the
cell life is dead, (like with Lazarus or Jesus Christ, if God hadn’t raised
them) the body can no longer be resuscitated.

So the complexity of cellular structure demands a theological
rather than a scientific or philosophic explanation for the origin of life. For
this cause a non-spiritual explanation of life is ludicrous.

“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in
them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the
world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his
eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” Rom. 1:19-20
