CINCINNATI—This evening at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, Shen Yun Performing Arts captivated theater goers by giving them a glimpse into the 5,000 year history of China’s civilization.
Jennifer Timm, who worked as a performer in New York City for several years and now works in non-profit management for classical Shakespearean theater came to see Shen Yun with her two daughters.
“We wanted to give the children the opportunity, as they grow older, to learn more about the Chinese culture, not just from the English language, but also from within the Chinese language,” Ms. Timm said.
New York-based Shen Yun aspires to deliver an exhilarating and unforgettable performance by bringing to life traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance.
Ms. Timm commented, “I think it’s sweet for the American audience to get this basic overview of the chronology of the Chinese history. So … it helps people who aren’t familiar with the history to have some touchstones.”
Making that personal connection with another culture is not always so simple. “I think that when another person speaks the language of a culture they have a different experience of the culture, you can feel it from the inside a little closer than if you were speaking in your first language,” Ms. Timm explained.
Overall Ms. Timm and her daughters loved the show. said, “It’s a fantastic performance. I feel so well taken care of because the performances are performed with such excellence.”
