DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—After seemingly endless hours of darkness, light came surprisingly quickly to Daytona International Speedway, overpowering the floodlights by which the drivers had maneuvered throughout the 13-hour night.
The race which the sunlight revealed was quite different that the one that had been running in the final hour of darkness.
Action Express was back into the lead of the race, but it wasn’t the #5 car which had led most of the race. Instead it was the #9 car piloted by Burt Frisellle which set the pace, but the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing with Ricky Taylor at the wheel, was in hot pursuit. Trying to catch back up and a lap down was Christian Fittipaldi in the #5 Action Express.
Lucas Luhr in the #6 Muscle Milk Pickett Racing Oreca-Nissan was up to fourth by dint of avoiding most problems and being mechanically sound. Behind Luhr, on the same lap, came Scott Dixon in the #02 Ganassi Riley-Ford, still running but no longer and immediate threat to the leaders.
Porsche still held the edge in GTLM with Patrick Pilet in the #911 Porsche North America RSR twelve seconds ahead of Robin Liddel in the #4 Corvette, with John Edwards in the #56 BMW Team RLL Z4 GTE in third.
Core Autosport retained its lead in the PC class, with Mark Wilkins in the #54 Oreca leading Enzo Potolicchio in the #25 8Star car and Alex Popow in the #7 Starworks car.
In GTD the #555 Level 5 Ferrari driven by Bill Sweedler led the GTD class, followed by Marco Seefried in the Snow Racing Porsche 911 GT America and Maurizio Mediani in the SMP/ESM Racing Ferrari 458 Italia.
