VANCOUVER—Retired banker Margaret Lebie has attended many different performances, but seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts was a different kind of experience.

“I think it’s fabulous… it’s eye candy; it’s artistically beautiful,” said Ms. Lebie, who watched the performance at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Thursday evening.

“I’ve never seen anything like this and I go to a lot of live theatre.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun presents classical Chinese dance and music. The company was formed by a group of leading classical Chinese artists with an aim to revive China’s divinely inspired culture.

“It makes me feel really good because its really soft and gentle but tells a really nice story,” said Ms. Lebie.

‘Fantastic’

Oscar, a cruise consultant who also heads many projects in China, said he found Shen Yun to be fantastic, praising the talent of both the male and female dancers. He said in some dance company’s the women outperform the men, but in Shen Yun’s case all the dancers were highly skilled.

“They are just truly amazing, everyone of them is amazing.”

He also praised the colours and the hundreds of hand-made costumes in the performance, as well as the themes carried throughout.

“The traditional values are excellent,” he said.

Rama Krishna, a researcher who also saw Shen Yun on Thursday, said he was fascinated by the performance.

“I always wanted to watch … the Chinese culture,” he said, and he got that chance on Thursday evening.

Mr. Krishna added that he was impressed by Shen Yun’s vocalists and their songs. The award-winning vocalists use the bel canto style to sing Chinese text.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has four touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
