Gov. Christie Inaugurated Under Cloud of Controversy
Gov. Christie Inaugurated Under Cloud of Controversy
Second-term governor promises to govern through ‘faith and trust’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was sworn in for a second term Tuesday in the Statehouse in Trenton, N.J., as Democrats ramped up an investigation into whether his administration abused its power.

Christie is considered a likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate. His 18-minute address dwelled on a 22-point lead in his re-election, which he called the “voices of affirmation.”

He made no direct mention of investigations that have already led to the firing or departure of four top aides or associates.

Christie also referred to New Jersey as “tough, resilient, and proud” and pointed to a bond between his administration and the people of the state, repeatedly using the phrase “faith and trust.”

Promises for his second term include easing the fiscal burden on the middle class, ensuring all children get quality education, and improving access to jobs for recovering drug addicts.

“We have no moral option in my view but to heed the voice of the voters and that is exactly what I intend to do,” said Christie.

His speech came less than an hour after Democratic lawmakers in the New Jersey Legislature announced they were joining twin probes into allegations that Christie’s aides engineered traffic jams in September as political retribution against a town mayor who did not support Christie in his re-election bid.

Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto said the merger of Assembly and Senate committees are the “optimal approach to ensuring the people of New Jersey get the answers they need to these questions about the abuse of government power.”

The U.S. Attorney’s office is also investigating the traffic jams. They happened over a few days in September when lanes leading to George Washington Bridge to New York City were closed.

Christie has apologized, denied any involvement, fired a deputy chief of staff at the center of the controversy, and cut ties with one of his top campaign advisers. Two officials Christie helped get hired at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the bridge, resigned.

New Controversy

Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, who was also sworn in as lieutenant governor on Tuesday, is at the center of a new controversy that erupted over the weekend.

Democratic Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer has accused Guadagno of pressuring her to support a real estate project in return for the delivery of Superstorm Sandy aid. Zimmer said Guadagno told her that the ultimatum was a direct message from Christie and the development is very important to him. Guadagno has described the account as false and illogical.

Though state lawmakers haven’t decided to extend their probe to the Hoboken issue, Zimmer did meet with investigators from the U.S. attorney’s office Sunday and gave them journal entries that are the main evidence to support her claims. She also offered to take a lie-detector test or testify under oath.

Christie has a national reputation as a blunt-talking and often funny politician committed to finding common ground with Democrats on certain key issues, including overhauling the state’s public-worker pension program and making it easier to fire teachers who are found to be underperforming. His leadership after parts of the state were hit hard by Sandy also raised his profile as a potential presidential candidate.

He worked with President Barack Obama and took on Republican members of Congress who were reluctant to approve aid for storm victims, getting high marks from constituents and national attention, as well as criticism from some conservatives who blamed him for being too cozy with Democrats.

Ken Cuccinelli is calling on Chris Christie to step down as chairman of the Republican Governors Association in the wake of the bridge scandal.

“Cuccinelli said that Christie’s ability to be a surrogate for other gubernatorial candidates had been compromised by the scandal, in which top Christie aides ordered lane closures on the George Washington Bridge to snarl traffic in a town of a mayor who refused to endorse his reelection bid.

“I think just from the perspective of setting aside this as an issue in other races it makes since for him to step aside in that role. He does not serve the goals of that organization by staying as chairman. And that doesn’t mean any of the charges political or otherwise are substantive or not, it doesn’t matter, perception is reality,” Cuccinelli said Tuesday evening on CNN.

Cuccinelli went on to say that he thought it was possible Christie might do so.”

When the Cooch calls on you to step down….does it get any lower than that? I absolutely believe Dawn Zimmer. On the news last night they showed her diary that she kept, she wrote down exactly what happened on the day it happened. The excuse that Hoboken was not one of the hardest hit areas as the reason that they did not receive funds for Sandy relief was absurd. Reports showed Hoboken had TWICE as much severe damage as the next closest in claims. Christie is up to his ears in this, and his staff is working on his orders. Every one of them should be thrown out of office, and be prosecuted.

The two special committees investigating Bridgegate will join forces, Democrats announced Tuesday.

The two SCIs will merge and use former Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Schar as the special counsel, they announced. Schar was named by the Assembly SCI last week.

The 12-member panel will have eight Democrats and four Republicans, the leaders announced.

It will have five Assembly Democrats, three Senate Democrats, three Assembly Republicans and one Senate Republican.

It will be co-chaired Assemblyman John Wisniewski and Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg.

Fascinating interview with Blagojevich’s Defense Attorney Sam Adam Jr. He explains how a federal investigation is handled, what prosecutors will be looking for, and why Christi may face RICO charges.

To start an investigation into pay for play politics and a pattern of corruption, the feds are going to start with campaign contributions. And that includes contributions to the Republican Governors Association – four companies gave to the RGA after receiving Sandy contracts.

The benefits of being an educator. Never heard that in college I’ll bet. My thrill was when after spending about a half hour trying to explain a math concept to someone and reducing it to as simple terms as I could think of, was to see the face light up as it all fell into place and no more half assed I got its.

          • TapestryMood

Great feeling, wasn’t it! I found such joy and satisfaction in teaching..always. ..I was born to rock and roll..and be a teacher…have never regretted it..but, given today’s climate, my heart hurts for those who are dedicated and facing such irrational treatment by politicians and media;-(

          • rg9rts

A shortage then a glut then a shortage… the fate of the educator and worse having the only tax that the average person has a say in . Blame Jefferson for his farms supporting the schools…Has to be a more equitable way top fund education.

          • TapestryMood

My State Constitution says education is its number one priority, thus each district gets “x” amount of state money based upon a formula…and levies can just pay about 10% of district funding…we can run technical equipment funding issues and building funding levies, etc. Thus, property owners pay much smaller % than other states. Much more fair, IMO.

          • rg9rts

And one of the selling points for the state lotteries was that it would reduce education taxes…Right! LOL

          • TapestryMood

I know we do get state education monies from them..don’t know how much though. Washington State really doesn’t seem to have the “crooked” political element so many states do. Our problem is we are one of the few states with no state income tax, thus other user taxes/fees are high.

          • rg9rts

LOL the pot tax! Make yourselves stupid while supporting education!

          • TapestryMood

Ha! Yep! Who’d a thunk it back in the 60’s/70’s when we tried to get people to listen:..LOL..Bong Bowl and Pot Tax..Washington Rocks;-P

          • rg9rts

Rockie mountain high too. When the pols see all the $$$$ they’ll all be on board.

          • TapestryMood

Ah, Colorado..loved it when I was young and visited family there..before the NRA nutso’s…secessionists, etc..I have a cousin who is a Democratic State Legislator there..he says it is really unbelievable what is happening..He was all for legalization;-)
Looks like at last 6 states are looking into it..maybe more..many will just start with Medical M, but it will go to all out legalization once that toe-hold is there…just a matter of time.

          • rg9rts

Loved Denver in the 60’s but not the pollution. New York just got medical pot. By executive order no less…its an election year dear!
