Shen Yun Has ‘Enormous Amount of Cultural Charm,’ Says Investor

NEW YORK—The beauty of traditional Chinese culture delighted investor Brad Bernstein and his wife Tamara when they saw Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company at Lincoln Center on Jan. 12.

“The show has been really breathtaking, so beautiful, and the dancers are so elegant,” Mr. Bernstein said after the performance, adding that he really “enjoyed the combination of the music and dancing and … the storytelling.”

Mr. Bernstein is a partner and the head of the New York office of the investment company FTV Capital. Having studied and lived in China as a young man, he was impressed with the display of traditional Chinese culture in the performance.

“[The performance] really has an enormous amount of cultural charm,” he said.

“It’s beautiful to be able to experience some of its most beautiful cultural aspects here tonight.”

The mission of New York-based Shen Yun is to revive China’s 5,000 years of traditional culture through classical Chinese dance, and dances from China’s ethnic minorities.

Refined and passed down in imperial courts for five millennia, classical Chinese dance is a complete dance system that incorporates acrobatic leaps and flips, and a myriad of movements that express the aesthetic principles of China’s different dynasties.

Hundreds of colorful hand-made costumes and an animated digital backdrop add color and an element of surprise to the choreography, and help tell traditional legends and stories of heroes, emperors, and deities.

One piece in this year’s performance told the story of how a fun-loving mythical demi-god Ne Zha, saved his village from a cruel dragon king.

The performance also featured three bel-canto opera solos sung by in Chinese by three different singers.

Mrs. Bernstein, who owns the interior design company, Tamara Meadow Interiors, thought “the songs were amazing,” and particularly enjoyed one of them though she did not specify which.

“The soprano was beautiful, just absolutely perfect. Her voice was just absolutely incredible, I thought,” Mrs. Bernstein said.

And the Bernsteins may be back to see next year’s performance.

“So happy we came tonight, I look forward to seeing them again,” said Mr. Bernstein.
