Taylor Smith Letter: Girl’s Letter to Future Self Found by Parents After She Dies

The Taylor Smith letter is going viral. It was found by the parents of the 12-year-old who died from pneumonia.

Taylor, a student at Liberty Bell Middle School in Johnson City, TN wrote a letter to her future self.

Tim Smith and his wife Ellen found the letter while going through Taylor’s belongings following Taylor’s death over the weekend.

The boxes were also filled with poems, journals, and letters of encouragement she had written to people but hadn’t yet given them, reported WJHL-TV.

One of the letters said on it: “To be opened by Taylor Smith on April 13, 2023 only unless said otherwise.”

The letter begins: “Dear Taylor, how’s life? Life is pretty simple 10 years in your past, I know I’m late for you, but I’m writing this early, so congratulations on graduating high school, if you didn’t, go back and keep trying, get that degree…Do you have your own place yet? If we’re in college what are we majoring in? Right now I want to be a lawyer.”

The letter includes advice to her future self and questions such as whether “Dr. Who” was still on the air.

It ends with: “Well, I think that’s all, but remember it’s been 10 years since I wrote this. Stuff has happened good and bad, that’s just how life works and you have to go with it.”

Tim Smith said that Smith has “touched people’s lives in ways that are unbelievable,” and that he is inspired by her example.

I don’t get it. She died, why would she write a letter about her future, if she isn’t going to be here in the future. Unless the resurrection happens in 2023, don’t see the point in the letter.
Sad she died at such a young age though :(

    • Wade

The article said they found it when they were going through her stuff. My guess is that she wrote it before she got sick. Pneumonia is not something you get that you live with for a long time. I would say maybe a few months tops. I’m sure she never expected something like this to happen to her.

      • http://www.dailymotion.com/MMOGaming GMAlonzo

oh i see. that makes it even more sad.:(
wish i had the power to bring that girl back to life. Well when the resurrection does happen, we all can see our loves ones again :)

        • Ryan McNeal

lol “resurrection”. keep your crazy fictional religious beliefs to yourself.

          • http://www.dailymotion.com/MMOGaming GMAlonzo

You think believing in what GOD said is fake and crazy?
No i won’t keep it to myself . If you don’t like what i said to bring comfort to those in mourning, don’t bothered saying anything at all.
You can laugh all you want, deny all you want, one day we all will
            bow down to our creator.

          • The Truth

I agree with GMAlonzo. I don’t get why Ryan McNeal is so intent upon telling us our beliefs are wrong. Doesn’t he have something better to do than belittle others? Well Ryan…..I must ask you a question. If the Christian dogma really is nothing but a “crazy, fictional, religious belief,” than explain why every human being is born with an innate moral consciousness/standard. What I mean to say is that we are never really intentionally “taught” what is good/right and what is bad/wrong. For example, you are never taught by your parents that killing people is wrong. You just know that this is not appropriate behavior. Many people will claim “Oh, society makes the rules that we follow or forms beliefs and those beliefs are subjective,” but that isn’t necessarily the case. In fact, it is that latter. Moral obligation is actually objective. It is a fact that we as human beings were put on this Earth to do good. To believe that moral obligation is not objective is to believe that all our decisions are based on wants and desires alone. That’s like saying that we shouldn’t be obliged to help those less fortunate, but that we only do so because we personally want to. This also supports the notion that we evolved from nothing but purposeless matter, which isn’t the case. Every human being has a purpose.

Or consider the beauty of nature. Have you ever looked at a snowflake before? Really observed one up close? You will notice symmetry in each snowflake design just as you will notice geometry. And each snowflake is different in pattern. Now, the presence of symmetry alone points to some kind of designer. Think of architecture. When you go out and look at a building, you see handiwork like that all the time. Now you are seeing it in nature. How do you think that snowflake got that way? By chance? Alignment of molecules? Of course not. That sort of genius points to a designer. A designer not of this physical world! (GOD.) Still not convinced? Think of it another way. Look at the Earth. How did it get here? Many claim that the Earth was formed by a fusion of molecules during the Big Bang, but what CAUSED that bang? Either way you spin it, there are still so many things that science can’t explained that become so much clearer when one embraces God and learns to accept Him. Take a watch for example. If I see a watch on someone’s arm and it is ticking and I wonder how it was created, I can assume that it’s existence is traced back to some kind of designer…..a watchmaker. So if this Earth exists and I can see it with space imagery, I can assume that it, too, is the product of a designer.

And I don’t get why those heavily devout to their “faith” are so intent on telling everyone else we are so wrong and will burn in hell for it. Really? C’mon. Freedom of expression is a two way street, fellas. Besides, all of your GOD and creator stuff you tried to use as ‘evidence’ up there has already been thoroughly explained through science.

            Formation of snowflakes:
            geology.com/articles/snowflakes/
Jeez, if you can’t look this stuff up yourself there’s no hope for you or anybody alike.

The Big Bang did not create Earth. This big floating rock came long after it. The planet wasn’t even remotely capable of forming until our sun was born. “And let there be light”, yes, it’s been scientifically established how suns are born to create solar systems. You are aware that the Milkyway is not the only solar system out there, right? I mean, we have photos of other ones. The nearest neighboring solar system is on a collision course with ours. Was that by design? I hope not. Pretty poor planning if you asked me. It’s science, not the majestic design of a non-physical being.

Speaking of which, is it not true your good book of Genesis 1:27 it states, “So God created mankind in his own image…” If this is the case then God is one messed up dude. We are not a very impressive species. Sure, there are some wonderful, astonishing, brilliant people out there, but the vast majority is a bunch of primitive shmucks that can’t get along with one another. Don’t even get me started on some of the sick, nasty, perverse things mankind does to each other – or other animals. If we’re the image of God, that’s one creature I definitely do not want to praise or worship.

          • The Truth

Well, now that I’ve read through this hateful diatribe of Christianity and God, I must say that I will pray for you my friend. I can tell you with wholehearted assurance that there is a God and He loves you and everyone on this planet more than you could ever know, even whenever you hurl insulting remarks at Him. I hope one day that you find Him. I mean, to me, there’s a reason why before everyone dies in tragedies or hears of something horrible that happened they say, “Oh my God!” That’s not just an expression. It’s a subconscious admission that those people do, in fact, know that there is a God that exists, or why else should they say this???

Science cannot explain away everything in this Universe. Don’t you remember, back in the historical days of yore, people USED to believe that the Earth was a flat surface. This was also thought by scientists around the world until “science” then discovered that the world was round in shape. No matter what you do or say, science does not provide all the answers. You say the sun was “born.” Well then what was it born from? Purposeless, pitiless, matter???

Isaac Newton once said, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Therefore everything that has an ending must have a beginning. So what was the beginning that created the sun?? We have the answer. We KNOW what the answer is…..do you???

          • God

If you checked some simple facts, you would clearly see that “scientists” didn’t consider the world flat. Christian-”Scientists” (a bit of an oxymoron) working for the church spread that with their evangelist propaganda. For years and years countless scientists and scholars knew and/or spoke of the true shape of the earth and more based upon scientific fact and what happened? Christians executed anyone spreading that knowledge for blasphemy because science doesn’t coincide with their agenda. Over time, scientific knowledge has expanded and has become more accessible thus hindering the grasp of Christians forcing their ignorance upon the innocent. Meanwhile, the Bible increasingly becomes more preposterous. But of course talking to most Christians is an exercise in futility.

          • The Truth

First of all, the fact that you have yourself named “God” seems silly to me, considering that you are taking the time to bash Christians. I do believe you are the one with mixed up facts here. “Christians” were not the ones that killed people. Christians were the persecuted ones!!!! Obviously you haven’t read up on your history enough to know that they were merely victims of the brutality and corruption of the Roman government through tragedies such as stonings, lynchings, beheadings, etc. all because of their religious beliefs! Christians do not promote the violence and killing of others. Therefore, it isn’t religion that creates chaos within society, it is the corruption of government. I mean, just look at U.S. government today as an example of this. (The government trying to take guns away from people, creating a “Nanny Nation” of people who look to the government for their next welfare check, government has taken control over our healthcare system and ultimately decides who lives or dies, etc.) Your conception of Christians is undoubtedly false! We promote the acceptance of others and although we would die willingly for our religious beliefs and standing up for what we know is right, our ultimate example of how to live our life is Jesus. Where in the bible (if you’ve even taken the time to read it, that is,) did Jesus ever hurt anyone else or kill anyone? NOWHERE. He was kind to the world, even whenever others slandered him and mocked him in the streets. I’ll pray for you my friend and I hope that one day you meet a true Christian that proves to you how false you are when it comes to the character of all practicing Christians out there!!

          • scneocon

You’re in for one Hell of a surprise.

          • Barbara Beal

Ryan the one thing that I’m gonna say to you about this is Jesus loves you. I pray for you and hope one day you will come to the light.

          • James Michael Taylor

What can it hurt to believe? If you’re right all I’ve done is waste a little time. But, what if I’m right?

    • Meredith Whaley

She wrote the letter last year on her 12th birthday to be read on her 22nd birthday. She was sick and treated for the flu on Friday and died early Sunday morning @ home. Pneumonia was discovered after she died. She was only sick for a few days.

      Read, then comment.

      • http://www.dailymotion.com/MMOGaming GMAlonzo

you’re like a day late lol

  • Dan M.

She must have known something was wrong when she didn’t receive a reply from her future self.

    • Meredith Whaley

A 12 year old girl is dead and you make jokes? Wow.

    • D.A, M

Your statement here has to be one of the most disgusting comments I have ever ready. A child dies, her family is in mourning and you want to joke about the girl by by stating “she didn’t receive a reply from her future self?” You sir are an ignorant person and remember the Karma has a way of coming back on those just like you

    • Brian Emmons

      LOL!

  • Granite Skyline

it’s almost as if she knew she was going to die.

    • HeyJude

That struck me, too. What an exceptional young girl, who does that at such a young age? What a loss for those parents, can’t even imagine.

  • konspikuous

    Sheesh

    • HeyJude

Now I’ve followed you here, I’ll get you ANOTHER cup. :-) Lots of bittersweet this morning, huh?

      • konspikuous

        Stalker! :p

        • HeyJude

Well, somebody has to keep an eye on you! :-)

  • Lapis Safeiros

Aw. This reminds me of this one YouTube video where this guy replays videos he recorded when he was young child and as an older man, he makes video responses.. to his younger self..

  • LeAnn Bravick Munson

I was very disheartened to read some of the comments here. We should be honoring this child who died, who lived a well lived life, even in her few years. It’s a tragedy, and I can’t imagine how deeply grieved the parents must be to lose such a special daughter. As a Christian, I believe science and religion can both have places in this world. Science to me, is just discovering more and more about the world around us. And validates to me, just how complex our creator is. I am non-denominational, since I believe having separate denominations just confuses, and keeps us separated. And of course, some denominations use their religious power to manipulate and weld power. That is not what Christianity is to me. Even if you do not believe in God, science tells us that nothing truly dies. It simply transforms into something else..Yes, there are alot of so called religious people that do not act according to their own beliefs. They are judgemental, prejudice, and some even act like being a Christian somehow makes them superior. But we are all the same. Our only motto should be one of love. We cannot force or should not force anyone to believe. There is free will. And my beliefs bring me a peace of a better world to look forward to, one without the negative things of this world. That alone is a pretty darn good reason to believe. :) But despite our differences, we should learn to coexist and agree to disagree We can only be responsible for ourselves and our own behavior. I am not offended by someone disagreeing with me. Because I know what I believe in, and I know its their own choice to believe or not. But I wish people were kinder and more open when disagreeing about things like religion. :/Me, I would rather take the higher ground and not respond to negative or hateful comments in a negative also. I chose not to let their negativity affect me. After all, its not about me anyways. I don’t take things like that personally. Especially from a total stranger. :)

well, here’s to another good person taken away from us, the world just doesn’t change, doesn’t it?
