Costume Designer Astonished by Shen Yun’s Costumes

MONTREAL, Canada—Costume designer Michel Jolicoeur was astonished by the work that went into the hundreds of original creation costumes worn by Shen Yun’s dancers at Place des Arts Tuesday night.

“It’s truly surprising. The costumes are incredible. I’m having difficulty following the dances because the details of the costumes are marvelous,” said Mr. Jolicoeur, the owner of Ja-Ga, the largest costume shop in the Laurentides region of Quebec.

The store specializes in period costumes, and caters to weddings, theatre, film, television, and other events.

But for Mr. Jolicoeur, Shen Yun’s costumes weren’t the only outstanding aspect of the performance. The precision of the dancers also stood out.

“Everything is perfectly synchronized,” he said. “One could even say that the fabrics follow the movements of the dance.

“The choreography, the visuals, the dances, the costumes, it’s truly ‘wow.’ I truly didn’t expect to see such a performance.”

Shen Yun presents around 15 dance pieces in each performance. Mr. Jolicoeur said each one took him to a new and incredible world.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the second part, to seeing the rest, and after that, to rediscover all those images in my head, and probably dream of them tonight. But truly, I’m like wow, it’s incredible. It’s truly something to see.”

Mr. Jolicoeur was also taken with the culture presented that night. Shen Yun was founded in New York on a mission to revive China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture. That culture has been systematically destroyed under communist rule in China, most notably during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s.

For Mr. Jolicoeur, experiencing traditional Chinese culture was a special treat.

“It’s a culture that I don’t know very well … It’s discovering an aspect of the Chinese that we [in Québec] don’t know at all, through different stories like this. It’s truly, truly impressive. It’s fascinating.”
