Scott Adams, the creator of the “Dilbert” comic strip, penned a blog post over the weekend, saying that he hopes “[his] father dies soon.”
In a profanity-laced blog, Adams argues for the controversial practice of doctor-assisted suicide to end a patient’s suffering.
“My father, age 86, is on the final approach to the long dirt nap (to use his own phrase). His mind is 98% gone, and all he has left is hours or possibly months of hideous unpleasantness in a hospital bed. I’ll spare you the details, but it’s as close to a living Hell as you can get. If my dad were a cat, we would have put him to sleep long ago. And not once would we have looked back and thought too soon,” he reasons.
He later says that “I might feel differently in a few years, but at the moment my emotions are a bit raw.”
“I don’t want anyone to misconstrue this post as satire or exaggeration. So I’ll reiterate. If you have acted, or plan to act, in a way that keeps doctor-assisted suicide illegal, I see you as an accomplice in torturing my father, and perhaps me as well someday,” he later states.
Adams also said that “if you’re a politician who has ever voted against doctor-assisted suicide, or you would vote against it in the future, I hate your [expletive] guts and I would like you to die a long, horrible death.”
A number of commenters on his blog offered their condolences and agreed with his stand on doctor-assisted suicide.
Some had mixed feelings, however.
“I don’t support doctor-assisted suicide, a person assisting suicide, or killing yourself for that matter. The way I see it, it’s your life and you should see it all the way through. Regardless of the consequences. However, if you sacrifice your life for a just cause, then I can support that kind of action, only if it’s the last resort,” one wrote on Facebook.
Others took a more harsh stand and disagreed with Adams’ statements about torturing politicians.
“You truly are a sociopath,” one wrote to Adams on his blog. “The irony is, if it were other people saying that everyone who is in favor of doctor-assisted suicide deserves to die (because they’re advocating for murder), you’d be the first in line to tell them how crazy they are for letting their personal feelings dictate such tyranny.”
On Facebook, another added: “This is sickening and a very sad point of view of the world. I fully disagree with this.”
