Guiuan, located in Eastern Samar Province was leveled by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

It was the first town to be hit by the storm.

The island has been isolated because of the destruction and subsequent loss of power.

Aerial photos from the Armed Forces of the Philippines on Sunday afternoon show intense damage.

Col. John Sanchez said via Facebook:

“Guian bore the brunt of Super Typhoon Yolanda at its first landfall last Friday. 100 percent of the structures either had their roofs blown away or sustained major damage. Nearly all coconut trees fell. We saw people in the streets, seemingly dazed. Trucks and cars were left in the streets where they were stopped in their tracks as Yolanda struck.”

“We were probably the first outsiders to fly over the area since Friday and obviously, no relief goods have arrived there yet. It was almost lunchtime but there was no smoke from cooking fires. The 2.4 km runway is clear of debris and could still be used by C130 aircraft. Yolanda is probably worse than Pablo and the only reason why we have no reports of casualties up to now is that communications systems in Region 8 are down…”

Television footage from Eastern Samar province’s Guiuan township showed a trail of devastation. Many houses were flattened and roads were strewn with debris and uprooted trees. The ABS-CBN footage showed several bodies laid out on the street, covered only with blankets.

“Even me, I have no house, I have no clothes. I don’t know how I will restart my life, I am so confused,” an unidentified woman said, crying. “I don’t know what happened to us. We are appealing for help. Whoever has a good heart, I appeal to you — please help Guiuan.” reported that Giporlos and Guiuan were both nearly completed destroyed.

Mark Biong, mayor of Giporlos, told the website: “It’s total destruction.”

Communication was cut off right after the storm hit and the Civil Defence Office said that it is too early to give a damage assessment.

On Twitter, a number of users said they could not reach loved ones.

Others pleaded to media entities and government agencies about the situation there.
