Film Producer Says Shen Yun ‘A nice, long daydream’

NEW YORK—Film producer James Smythe said he was inspired by Shen Yun Performing Arts.

Mr. Smythe produces travel videos and owns My Kind of Town, a private tour company.

“I love the energy, I love all the colors,” he said, after seeing Shen Yun at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on the evening of April 27.

The performance, he said, was like “a nice, long daydream.”

“It’s very inspiring, it’s very lighthearted,” Mr. Smythe said.

New York-based Shen Yun has a goal of reviving traditional Chinese culture.

“Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,” according to the company’s website. “Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired.”

Mr. Smythe said the music in Shen Yun is fantastic. The Shen Yun Orchestra melds both classical Western and traditional Chinese instruments, such as the pipa, or Chinese lute.

Mr. Smythe attended Shen Yun last year, and decided to come back to experience it again.
