The blob fish may be the ugliest animal on the planet.
British comedian Paul Foot says of the aquatic creature that inhabits Australia’s southern coastal waters, “I believe the sad face of the blob fish belies a kind and very wise brain in there.”
Foot endorses the blob fish in a race for the world’s ugliest animal. The Ugly Animal Preservation Society and the National Science + Engineering Competition in the UK are holding a contest through YouTube in which comedians rally votes for a given ugly animal in need of preservation.
The voting is done by clicking the “like” button below the YouTube videos for the various animals.
Among the other contenders are the Scrotum frog of Lake Titicaca, the Greater short-horned lizard, the Pig-nosed turtle of northern Australia, and Canada’s Dromedary jumping slug.
The vote opened Tuesday, Aug. 27, and will run through to Wednesday, Sept. 11. (UPDATE: The blob fish won.)
