NEW YORK—Shen Yun Performing Arts graced the stage at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on April 25, enchanting the full house audience.
Peter Moodie, president of Enzyme Development, said that he enjoyed the performance. “It’s an uplifting and thoughtful show, very thought provoking,” he said.
New York-based Shen Yun traverses the globe presenting the 5,000 year-old, divinely inspired Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese culture upholds virtues such as veneration for the divine, benevolence, and sincerity.
“In less than 10 minutes each, Shen Yun dances recount ancient myths, bygone heroes, or celestial paradises,” explains Shen Yun’s website. “Whether set in the past or in contemporary China, every dance embodies traditional Chinese values.”
Mr. Moodie said one particular dance, which presents a part of the classic novel “Journey to the West,” stood out to him, because he had read it.
Mr. Moodie also said that he loved the dancing and the costumes—classical Chinese dance is at the heart of a Shen Yun performance, accentuated by handmade costumes, digital backdrops, and an orchestra the melds both classical Western and Chinese instruments.
Linda Estabillo, a singer and dancer who currently works as a massage therapist, also said the performance was tremendous.
The dance especially struck her, because she said she can relate to the amount of effort and dedication it takes.
“The words almost come out through their bodies, and it is like a form of meditation,” she said, referring to the expressive nature of Chinese dance. “That really shocked me. People are from a totally different country, but I understood them. That was beautiful.”
