Someone went into the Wikipedia entry for Edward Snowden, who leaked classified information about U.S. surveillance programs, and changed the word describing Snowden from “dissident” to “traitor.” That person was using a computer with an IP address from the United States Senate.
The change was discovered by people on Wikipediocracy, a website critical of the crowd-sourced online dictionary, and reported on by the Daily Dot, which says that the change was made from a computer with a Senate IP address.
The edit could have been made by a senator, a staffer, or an intern. The person who attempted to edit the entry has also recently made edits in other entries, including grammatical edits on the entry for the novel “Five People You Meet in Heaven.”
After the change was made, multiple other edits were made for the word. Snowden is now described as “an American intelligence leaker,” the word changed now being leaker.
