Saudi Woman Who Wore Skirt Is Arrested After Video Posted Online

A Saudi woman was arrested after she was filmed walking in the desert Kingdom wearing a mini-skirt.

The woman—a model named “Khulood”—shared a video on Snapchat walking through the village of Ushaiqer wearing a crop top, skirt, and sneakers.

Riyadh police then issued a warrant for her arrest, and reports say she was arrested on Monday for “disrespecting and violating the teachings of Islam.”

State TV later reported that she was arrested for dressing “indecently,” MailOnline reported.

Women in Saudi Arabia have to wear long, loose robes—known as abayas—in public, although state dignitaries get some exceptions.

On Twitter, some demanded that she be arrested and others asserted that freedom to wear what they want shouldn’t be a crime.

One commenter said: ‘What she did doesn’t fall under ‘personal freedom’. It’s clear that she wanted to provoke people and go against the country’s social rules and norms. She must be punished for this.’

“Just like we call on people to respect the laws of countries they travel to, people must also respect the laws of this country,” Ibrahim al-Munayif, a Saudi writer, wrote on Twitter, The Associated Press reported.

But others disagreed.

One twitter user wrote of the woman’s video: “She’s freely walking around Ashaiqer, regardless of all the backlash, it’s still a beautiful idea.”

Another added: “Why all this fuss? You turned your eyes away from all the catastrophes in the world and the only thing that outraged you is a woman not wearing an abaya?”

Another wrote: “She didn’t force anyone to follow her on Snapchat. Her account is also only directed at women. What’s the problem? Why call for an arrest warrant against her?”
