A U.S. Navy destroyer collided with a merchant ship near Japan at around 2:30 a.m. local time, the Navy confirmed.
The USS Fitzgerald collided with the vessel about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan.
“The U.S. Navy has requested Japanese Coast Guard assistance in responding to the collision,” the Navy release reads. “The extent of damage is being determined. The extent of personnel injuries is being determined. The incident will be investigated.”
According to the Navy Times, there were injuries.
The USS Fitzgerald, commissioned in 1995, is not able to operate under its own power, CBS News reported, citing a Defense Department official.
Its crew includes 23 officers, 24 chief petty officers, and 291 enlisted Navy members.
