A shooting has been reported the Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida, with a police investigation currently underway.

NBC Miami, citing law enforcement sources, reported that at least five people were killed in the shooting and several others people were shot and injured the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday afternoon. Later, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that “multiple people” were killed in the shooting.

Thirteen people have been injured in all and were taken to nearby hospitals, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told local media outlets.

Officials said the shooting occurred at a baggage claim area in Terminal 2 at around 1 p.m. local time. By 1 p.m., the report said, a suspect was in police custody.

Passengers and airport employees have been evacuated from the area, while gates D4 and D5 were cleared, local media reported.

It’s unclear the extent of the victims’ injuries.

“I’m at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running,” former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer tweeted Friday. He served under the administration of George W. Bush.

“All seems calm now but the police aren’t letting anyone out of the airport – at least not the area where I am,” Fleischer wrote.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed it is “responding to shooting at Fort Lauderdale airport to assist state and local partners.”

“I was dodging bullets and trying to help people get out of the way,” witness Mark Lea told NBC of the shooting, which occurred inside the baggage claim area.

“At first we thought it was firecrackers,” he added. “Everyone started screaming and running. The shooter made his way down through baggage claim. He had what looked like a 9mm and emptied his entire clip. People were trying to run.”

He said that once the shooter ran out of ammunition,  “he was gunned down by police.”

“It was absolutely surreal,” he said. “People were scared and frantically running to avoid being shot. People were tripping over each other. They were trying to make a fast exit out of the door.”

President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that he is “monitoring the terrible situation in Florida” and that he has communicated with Florida Gov. Rick Scott. For his part, Scott said he’s now traveling to the airport. “Thoughts and prayers for all. Stay safe!” Trump added.

Federal aviation authorities sent out a “ground stop” notice for the airport, barring flights from leaving or entering.
