Chicago Shootings: 39 People Shot, 4 Dead in Weekend Violence

At least 39 people have been shot—four fatally—in another weekend of violence in Chicago, according to media reports.

According to CBS Local, citing Chicago Police, the shootings took place from the evening of Friday, Aug. 19, to Sunday, Aug. 21. The number of shootings will likely rise.

The most recent shooting death took place early Sunday morning on Chicago’s Southwest Side in Marquette Park. In that incident, a 25-year-old was involved in an argument with another male at 2:49 a.m. local time at a house party, police said. Gunshots were then heard, and the 25-year-old man was found shot in the head on the front lawn of the residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two hours earlier, in the West Grenshaw neighborhood, a 21-year-old man was found shot on the front porch of a home. He was shot at a different location before he walked to his home, telling his family what took place. When officials arrived, he was rushed to Mount Sinai hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A 20-year-old man was also gunned down in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood on the Northwest Side on Saturday night. Officers responded to a call at 8:15 p.m. of a shooting, and they found the man with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. His name wasn’t released. Other circumstantial details were not given.

And at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, a man was shot and killed in the West Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. He was identified as 25-year-old Christopher Kent, and he was shot about a block from where he lived. Police said that he was shot several times, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, citing police. Other details were not released.

On Sunday, a 14-year-old boy was critically wounded during a shooting on Chicago’s West Side Austin neighborhood. He was standing on the corner of North and Luna avenues around 4 a.m. when he was gunned down, police told the Sun-Times. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The DNAInfo news website says that a total of 448 people have been killed in Chicago in 2016. In 2015, 493 people were murdered. The Chicago Tribune says that 2,647 have been shot this year; in 2015, there were 2,988 shooting victims.
