US Gymnasts Refuse to Leave Without Gold Medals After Fire Alarm at Olympic Village

“Stop, drop, and grab the gold!”

When the fire alarm went off at the U.S. women’s gymnastics team’s Olympic Village dorm on Aug. 10, the girls fetched their most prized possessions—their Olympic gold medals.

Simone Biles documented the incident on her Snapchat.

“The fire alarm is going off, but we’ve got our gold medals!,” a giggly Biles said.

She reiterated the same point on Twitter, tweeting: “When a fire alarm goes off in your building, grab your medal and gym bag. #everythingisokay.”

The rest of her teammates—Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian, and Aly Raisman—can be seen in the background.

“At least we got the medals, man,” added Hernandez.

The episode turned out to be a false alarm.

The “Final Five” have been a dominant force in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. The team scored 184.897 to beat second-place Russia by more than eight points in the all-around competition.

The girls have individually been just as great. On Aug. 11, Biles won Olympic gold in women’s all-around, while Raisman placed second.

This is the last Olympics where the team will consist of five members. For the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, the women’s gymnastics team will only consist of four members. The new lineup change is one of the reasons for the group’s nickname, “Final Five.”

Coach Marta Karolyi is another reason behind the nickname. Karolyi will retire from coaching after nearly four decades, and her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“We’re the ‘Final Five’ because this is Marta (Karolyi’s) last Olympics and without her none of this would’ve been possible,” Aly Raisman told TODAY’s Hoda Kotb. “We wanted to do it for her just because she’s there with us every single day.”

The stoic coach appreciated their symbolic gesture.

“I’m very proud and, yes, I cried,” Karolyi said. “I’m not sentimental, but when Aly told me the name of the team is the Final Five, that is the moment.”
