Small Plane Crashes Into Los Angeles Building Near Van Nuys Airport

LOS ANGELES — A small plane has crashed into a building near a Los Angeles airport, killing the pilot.

Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart says the single-engine plane went down shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday about two blocks east of Van Nuys Airport.

Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was a single-engine Arion Lightning. He says the pilot was practicing touch-and-go landings at the airport before the crash.

Stewart says the plane hit a cinder block building. The building wasn’t badly damaged.

The pilot was the only person aboard. Stewart says nobody on the ground was hurt and there wasn’t any fire.

TV reports show the plane virtually disintegrated, with small pieces of wreckage at the bottom and side of the building and on a parked pickup truck.
