Shen Yun Shows ‘We come from heaven, we go back to heaven’

WASHINGTON—Through Shen Yun’s performance, not only did Dr. John Convey learn about the history of traditional Chinese music and dance, he also found a universal message that connects all human experience.

Dr. John Convey is a professor at the Catholic University of America and an expert in Catholic education. “I’m a very spiritual person,” said Convey after a Feb. 21 performance of Shen Yun at the Kennedy Center Opera House. “I understand the spiritual dimension. And I enjoy music and I enjoy dancing, and history, so there was everything in there that I enjoy,” he said.

Shen Yun is a New York-based performing arts company that seeks to revive the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through music and dance. But Shen Yun’s story-based dances and vocal performances are not only an artistic presentation; they often convey themes of spirituality, a legacy of the ancient Chinese belief that Chinese culture was passed down to humans by gods.

Convey enjoyed how Shen Yun’s performance connected the present day to spiritual faith. “Liberation through the spiritual dimension. The fact that we’re all connected together as people, but also connected to heaven. We come from heaven, we go back to heaven,” he said.

Finally, he recommended that everyone should go see it.
