Dozens of people are reportedly dead, and many more injured, after the riot at Topo Chico prison in Monterrey, northeastern Mexico.

Inmates’ relatives were reportedly inside the prison for conjugal visits at the time. They say gunshots rang out and a fire was started in the early hours. Government officials say the situation was brought under control, but that inmates are still restive.

The incident—just days ahead of a planned visit by Pope Francis to Mexico—is the latest in a series of deadly riots in recent years inside the nation’s notoriously overcrowded prisons.
