Architects Will Start Building Jenga-Like Tower in Texas Next Month

Developers will start building odd-looking tower that resembles the game of Jenga in Austin, Texas, next month, according to reports.

The $300 million, 58-story condo building is known as The Independent will be the tallest building in Austin and the tallest residential tower west of the Mississippi River.

“This is going to become the beacon of the neighborhood,” Kevin Burns, CEO of Urbanspace, told KHOU-TV.

However, while media outlets have said it is going to resemble the game of Jenga, one of the building’s architects said he’s never heard of it.

“I didn’t even know what Jenga was until I saw that in an article that came out,” said Brett Rhode, director of Rhode Partners.

He said his team is trying to be different.

“We’re trying to get away from kind of a more generic building type that you might see a lot of, especially in Austin, and try to kind of shake, shake it up a little bit,” added Rhode.

Jenga was a game created in the 1970s that’s become among the most popular. The word “jenga” is derived from the Swahili word for “to build.” Leslie Scott, the creator of the game, said that more than 50 million Jenga games, or the equivalent of 2.7 billion Jenga blocks, have been sold around the world since its creation.
