Michigan Woman Asks for Birthday Cake Decoration, Story Goes Viral

A Michigan woman went to the grocery store to pick up a birthday cake, but had no clue what was going to happen next.

Lisa Aldrich said that she went to a Meijer grocery store in Gaines Township to pick up a cake and get it decorated for someone’s birthday.

She explained on Facebook how she asked someone she thought was a bakery employee to write a message on it, then took it to the cash register.

“After looking, I nervously laughed and headed to check out — it didn’t really matter to me that it looked so bad,” Aldrich wrote.

Employees at the register offered to make a new one but Aldrich said it was fine. The employees then called a manager over.

“To my surprise, after they discussed it, one cashier put her arm on my shoulder and said ‘The girl who wrote that has autism. Thank you for smiling and thanking her — even though she’s not supposed to write on cakes, you probably made her day,'” Aldrich said.

“So I guess the moral of the story is that kindness is important!”

The story has been liked and shared over 100,000 times.

A Meijer spokesperson confirmed the story with Fox17, and said the chain is proud to include people with disabilities among its staff.

Aldrich later clarified that the autistic woman didn’t get in trouble. “They told her to do whatever she needed to do to serve the customer’s needs, and she did just that,” she said. She also said she’s received positive messages from over 100 people with autism.
