A profound picture showing a Great Pyrenees dog standing guard over his dead friend has gone viral.
Volunteers rushed to the scene after the picture started circulating, taken by passerby Samuel Flores.
The scene unfolded across the street from Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Flores alerted animal advocate Julie Fennell, who posted his picture on an advocate page and urged someone close by to stop while she rushed over.
“When I got there we took him to my car and loaded his friend up to get scanned,” Fennell told The Dodo. “You could tell from the blood in the road that he had dragged her body out of the road up onto the grass. When we drove away he got into the small back window of my car to look for his friend.”
Based on the condition of the other dog, the accident happened several hours prior.
“He is a very loyal dog,” Fennell said. “When we were driving to the shelter he sat with his paw on my shoulder.”
But no one has come forward to claim the dog, so he’s been taken to a shelter. They do know he seemed quite attached to the other dog, who he had dragged off the road to protect.
“He made a friend,” Fennell told NBC. “Whether it was his companion in his yard at home or whether they met up as strays, but something made him stay by her side.”
If no one claims the Great Pyrenees at Dallas Animal Services, he’ll be released to Spin rescue, which focuses on rescuing and placing Great Pyrenees dogs.
