According to Hong Kong's Mingpao News, the number of families with only one child is on the rise in China, making it harder to find matching donors for bone marrow transplants. The government is calling for people to donate their bone marrow.
On the morning of August 17, the Zhejiang Province Red Cross accepted a three million yuan donation from Guo Xinfu, President of the Zhejiang Hangzhou Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. This donation was intended for a student-aid fund designed to encourage and help the 1000 impoverished college students who volunteer to donate their bone marrow to the Chinese Marrow Donor Program (CMDP).
From August 17 to 23, the Red Cross in Zhejiang Province accepted applications from this year's college freshmen who volunteer to donate their bone marrow to the Zhejiang branch of the CMDP. Every student receives three thousand yuan when an agreement is reached.
With more and more one-child families in China decreasing the opportunities for people to find matching bone marrow donors, the Health Departments are calling for more people to volunteer to donate their bone marrow.
